GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The GIS & Agrivoltaics Education Coordinator will the development, adaptation, and delivery of a bilingual (Spanish English) GIS agrivoltaics siting curriculum for farmworker high school–aged youth and their families in the Eastern Coachella Valley.
This position will work collaboratively with the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability (RRC) at Pitzer College and Alianza Nacional de Campesinas (ANC) to support workforce development objectives under the Inland SoCal Thrive Catalyst Pre-Development Grant.
The coordinator will integrate SoCal Earth, a geospatial data platform with 300+ environmental layers, into culturally responsive curriculum and instruction that introduces youth to clean energy, land-use planning, and agrivoltaics career pathways. The role combines technical GIS work, curriculum design, bilingual instruction, and community-centered engagement.
The coordinator will work with the director and other Redford Conservancy staff as needed to coordinate and conduct training as appropriate.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
GIS & Agrivoltaics Curriculum Teaching Assistant
- Working with GIS curricular lead, help implement a GIS agrivoltaics siting curriculum aligned with the goals of the Inland SoCal Thrive grant and ANC partnership.
- Help translate complex geospatial and agrivoltaics concepts into accessible, youth-appropriate, and bilingual instructional modules.
- Assist in implementation of hands-on GIS exercises using SoCal Earth focused on solar potential, soils, water, crop compatibility, environmental constraints, and community impacts.
- Produce bilingual instructional materials, including lesson plans, slide decks, worksheets, datasets, and mapping templates.
Bilingual Instruction & Training Delivery
- Support GIS and agrivoltaics teaching modules to approximately 20–30 farmworker youth (ages 16–24) in Spanish and English.
- Provide parallel bilingual learning opportunities for parents and family members through workshops and demonstrations.
- Facilitate project-based learning in which participants create agrivoltaic sitting maps and analyses relevant to local agricultural contexts.
- Support youth in developing presentation and communication skills around their GIS work.
SoCal Earth Platform Support
- Assist in customizing and curating relevant SoCal Earth data layers for agrivoltaics siting and workforce training.
- Assist with data visualization, map creation, and basic troubleshooting to support instructional use of the platform.
- Provide feedback to RRC staff on platform usability for bilingual, community-based education contexts.
Community Engagement & Partnerships
- Work closely with ANC staff and member organizations (including Líderes Campesinas) to ensure culturally grounded implementation.
- Participate in community meetings, listening sessions, and program showcases.
- Build trust with youth and families by incorporating lived agricultural knowledge into GIS learning activities.
Documentation, Evaluation & Grant Support
- Document curriculum materials and instructional approaches to support replication across California farmworker regions.
