Pay Range: $23.35 - $24.41 | Onsite Calera, Oklahoma | Monday - Friday | 8:00AM-4:30PM

The Research Associate I contributes to various projects within the Genealogy department and the Choctaw Nation by providing research and analysis on complex historical and genealogical information. This position requires someone who can work independently under general supervision.

Job Purpose or Objective(s): The Research Associate conduct in-depth historical and genealogical research to assist individuals in tracing Choctaw ancestry and understanding family heritage. This role supports the preservation and communication of Choctaw Nation history through individual research services, public education, and community outreach initiatives.

Primary Tasks:

1. Organize and conduct research using a wide range of historical and genealogical sources, including vital records, tax rolls, church and cemetery records, census data, military files, legal documents, personal papers, and digital archives.

2. Analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources to trace Choctaw ancestry and family lineage, ensuring accuracy and consistency with established documentation standards.

3. Develop research plans and methodologies to guide genealogical investigations, based on the scope of inquiry and available resources.

4. Document and prepare detailed reports summarizing findings, research methods, and source citations to support tribal members and public inquiries related to Choctaw ancestry.

5. Maintain, update, and manage historical databases and digital records, ensuring data integrity, organization, and accessibility for future use.

6. Collaborate with other researchers, tribal departments, and external agencies to verify findings and access supplemental resources as needed.

7. Present research findings through educational outreach efforts, including community events, presentations, and public speaking engagements that promote awareness of Choctaw heritage.

8. Ensure confidentiality and ethical handling of sensitive personal and historical information, in accordance with tribal policies and data privacy standards.

9. Assist with preservation and archival efforts, organizing and maintaining both physical and digital genealogical materials.

10. Perform other responsibilities as may be assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

· Associate's degree in history, anthropology, Native American studies, or;

· An equivalent combination of education and experience in lieu of a degree

· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

· Working knowledge of Choctaw Nation history and culture

· Experience using databases, digital archives, and file management systems

· Two (2) years of experience in research, administrative support, or archival work (academic research experience or internships may be considered)
