Job Duties
The purpose of this position is to make sure that the University stays in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, including state and local requirements regarding students with disabilities. This position also provides support (counseling and advocacy) and services (classroom accommodations, test-taking alternatives, encouragement, and assistance) to students with disabilities in an effort to assist them in their goal of securing a degree from Norfolk State University. To achieve this goal, collaborations occur with students, parents, faculty, high schools, and community agencies
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures; knowledge of disability law/compliance in a postsecondary environment; knowledge of budget preparation, monitoring, and administration; skill in developing program goals and objectives; skill in analyzing and problem-solving; skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional and helpful manner; ability to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations; ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and perform projects and tasks with an attention to detail; ability to maintain strict confidentiality, and the ability to analyze problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes.
Additional Considerations
Education, Experience, and Licensure, Certification required for entry into the position: A Bachelor’s Degree is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in education/special education, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field with a minimum of three years of professional experience providing direct services to students with a wide range of disabilities. Demonstrated effectiveness and experience supervising and instructing; knowledge of and experience interpreting and applying Federal Regulation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.
