ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Fleet Equipment Mechanic position at the City of Tucson’s General Services Department performs preventative maintenance, repairs, overhauls, adjustments, and rebuild actions on general purpose fleet equipment, including trailers, auxiliary power units, walk behind rollers, light boards. This position assists other mechanics when needed and prepares new fleet vehicles for services. 

Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent.  This position does not supervise.   

Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintains, repairs and rebuilds trailers, small equipment and engines. Performs minor maintenance as directed on fleet vehicles, and ensures fleet vehicles are in optimal condition. 

• Handles operational issues, including investigating, resolving and addressing problems. Reviews user complaints and provides responses regarding status of equipment and fleet repairs. 

• Repairs electrical systems by inspecting and diagnosing electrical malfunctions, locating and replacing worn or damaged parts, and assembling to current approved regulation specifications. 

• Performs fleet vehicle tune-ups, oil changes, light wiring, frame inspections, and tongue and hitch inspections. 

• Operates computer-based management systems to review maintenance history. Prepares reports of repairs status, parts, and materials.  

• Performs tune-ups and oil changes on small auxiliary power units and picks up parts for them. 

• Cleans and organizes bay and shop areas and moves vehicles as necessary. 

• Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
One (1) year of directly related experience
Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License
