About the role

We Mean Business Coalition (WMBC) is a group of nonprofit organizations, working with the world’s most influential businesses to take action on climate change. Together, we catalyze business and policy action to halve emissions by 2030 and accelerate an inclusive transition to a net-zero economy. 

The Finance Director role is critical to the success of WMBC and is responsible for the financial health of the organization. The director will create and maintain financial records, prepare financial reports, and oversee the organization's budget. In addition, the finance director will be responsible for the organization’s processes, governance, and legal compliance.  

The Finance Director’s team provides financial support to the organization and ensures the processes are inclusive and aligned with the strategy.  The team is responsible for both finance and grant management, which includes tasks such as monthly closing processes, financial analysis & reporting, internal controls, accounting and grant management. 

The Finance Director will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will closely work with the teams working on People Operations, Fundraising and Impact. The Finance Director will also support departments across the coalition secretariat in strategic planning, resourcing and fundraising. 

Requirements

 Responsibilities & Tasks 

  • Responsible for overall execution of Finance team objectives 
  • Financial reporting to management and Board 
  • Board governance & legal compliance 
  • In charge of risk management for the whole organization 
  • Focus on streamlining financial operations to create efficiencies 
  • Lead the preparation and review of the annual financial statements, form 990 preparation, and annual budgeting process 
  • Develop and ensure compliance with internal controls across the Coalition 
  • Management of the Coalition’s audit firm and outside accountants/legal counsel, and banking relations 
  • Provide financial reports to other departments as needed, including grant reports and budgets. 
  • Management of the regranting process with the Grants team 

 

Skills & Approach 

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills are required, including Excel and financial modeling  
  • Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills to be able to effectively transmit information across the organization 
  • Ability to work as part of a team that is split across various regions in the world 
  • Strong people management experience 
  • Must be able to display a high level of adaptability and flexibility in any given situation 
  • Must be meticulous in handling assignments and ensuring details are correct 
  • Experience in US nonprofit GAAP  
  • Board governance experience 

 

Experience & Education 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field; Master’s degree preferred 
  • +10 years of relevant experience  
  • Proven experience working within GAAP and applying GAAP principles to accounting practices. Experience with nonprofit GAAP a plus 
  • Experience with Quickbooks Online or other accounting systems 
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred 
  • Experience in contracting process and review
