Are you looking for a career where you can use your customer service and negotiation skills? The Maine Department of Labor is seeking a Billing and Collections Specialist to join our Unemployment Tax Unit. We offer a flexible hybrid remote and in-office work schedule. 

Primary responsibilities include:  

  • Contacts debtors to assess the employer debt situation.
  • Examines employer records to determine which collection action would be most effective to bring employer into compliance.
  • Analyze records to determine who the responsible party is for employer debt.
  • Arrange for settlements and payment agreements and other advanced collection activities.
  • Determine when collection efforts are no longer effective, and request write off.
  • Field inbound calls to provide effective customer service to employers regarding their Unemployment Contributions account

Skills or knowledge required:

  • Customer Service – written and verbal communication, active listening, empathy, identifying needs, clarifying information.
  • Problem Solving – ability to analyze a situation, review possible actions and identify the best solution.
  • Negotiation – negotiating terms of settlements and payment plans.
  • Attention to Detail – reviewing employer accounts for accuracy of filing

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in accounting, business administration, economics or related field and two (2) years of technical or administrative level experience in accounting, auditing, tax preparation or examination, or related field (must include customer service and public contact). Comparable work experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. 

Preference will be given to those applicants:

• Prior experience in collections, accounts receivable, payroll processing
