As an Automotive Services Mechanic A, you will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment. This is the advanced journey-level classification in the series. Employees in this role serve as lead technicians and subject matter experts for the repair and maintenance of complex vehicle and equipment systems. Work involves in-depth diagnostics, rebuilding of major components, troubleshooting advanced electronic and multiplex systems, and performing field repairs under minimal supervision.

Examples of duties
- Diagnose and repair electronic engines, heavy equipment, specialized equipment, electronic transmissions, anti-lock braking systems, electrical systems, multiplex systems, air conditioning and heating systems, steering systems, fuel systems, and suspensions.
- Rebuild and repair fire pump transmissions, fire truck valves, water pumps, transfer cases, differentials, brakes, power steering boxes, and engines.
- Prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks.
- Open, close, and update work orders.
- Ensure all repairs are performed to specifications.
- Assist others with complex repairs and diagnostics.
- Read and interpret repair manuals and schematics.
- Perform field service calls.
- Conduct failure analysis and perform tire repairs.
- Train other personnel.
- Perform minor welding and parts fabrication.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED with a minimum of six months of vocational training in automotive/vehicle mechanics and engine repair.Three years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
Must possess and maintain a valid state Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving history or must obtain CDL within six months of employment.
Must hold at least four (4) ASE certifications.
Work Schedule: M-F 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Supplemental information
Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.
Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of techniques, practices, procedures, test equipment, and documentation used in all aspects of maintenance for automotive vehicles, trucks, fire apparatus, and other fleet equipment.
Skill in diagnosing and repairing equipment failures.
Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
Skill in the interpretation of manuals and schematics.
Skill in oral and written communication.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include standard operating procedures, safety guidelines, and city policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
