The Opportunity
The Senior Project Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial success of large-scale construction, manufacturing, and data center projects. This position is responsible for project accounting, revenue recognition, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, account reconciliations, financial analysis, and month-end close activities while ensuring financial accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
Reporting to the Accounting Manager, the Senior Project Accountant partners closely with Project Managers, Operations, Manufacturing, and Finance leadership to support project financial performance, improve reporting accuracy, and provide insights that drive business decisions. This role also serves as a mentor and resource for Staff Accountants while helping maintain strong accounting controls and financial processes.
What you will do?
- Manage project accounting activities, including revenue recognition, percentage of completion accounting, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, project cost analysis, and financial reconciliations.
- Prepare and analyze trial balances, journal entries, intercompany transactions, and monthly account reconciliations to support accurate financial reporting and month-end close activities.
- Maintain lease accounting, fixed asset accounting, depreciation schedules, and balance sheet reconciliations in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
- Partner with Project Managers, Operations, and Finance teams to analyze project performance, monitor financial results, and support forecasting and reporting requirements.
- Provide guidance, training, and support to Staff Accountants while identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting efficiency.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- 5+ years of accounting experience supporting project-based, construction, manufacturing, engineering, or industrial environments.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, revenue recognition (ASC 606), percentage of completion accounting, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and general ledger accounting.
- Experience with account reconciliations, month-end close, fixed assets, intercompany accounting, and financial statement analysis.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, data analysis, and financial reporting.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with accounting, operations, project management, and leadership teams.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and support junior accounting team members.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience within construction, engineering, design-build, EPC, manufacturing, industrial, or data center environments.
- Experience supporting large-scale projects, job costing, project financial reporting, and project-based accounting.
- Experience with ERP systems such as Deltek Costpoint, Oracle, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, JD Edwards, Infor, or similar platforms.
- Experience with lease accounting (ASC 842), revenue recognition, and complex project accounting structures.
- Familiarity with business intelligence and reporting tools such as Cognos, Power BI, or similar platforms.
- Experience working in high-growth, entrepreneurial, or rapidly scaling organizations.
