Senior Engineer, Power Plant Test and Operations

The pay for this position ranges from $98000 - $113000.

 

 

Summary:

 

A Engineer within the Power Plant Test & Operations Engineering department of FuelCell Energy, will be responsible for contributing engineering support to the monitoring, analysis and operation of a fleet of SureSource© Power plants as well as contributing to the development and testing of new FuelCell Energy technologies. This position reports to the Manager of Test and Operations Engineering, and involves collaboration with all branches of FuelCell Energy Engineering departments as well as direct communication and support for FuelCell Energy Technology and Service departments, and external contractors.

 

FuelCell Energy’s SureSource© products include a range of power generation, hydrogen generation, carbon dioxide capture, biogas cleanup and heat recovery plants involving a a complex process centered around our core fuel cell technologies as the heart of the system that supports the electro-chemical reaction, chemical reforming, power generation, electrolysis, and similar processes with many supporting elements including: the electrical balance of plant (inverters, switchgear, transformers), mechanical balance of plant (piping, Instrumentation, blower, pumps, valves, chemical catalyst beds and reactors, heat exchangers), and site specific balance of plant equipment.  In addition to supporting plant operations, this position is also responsible for providing engineering support to plant start-ups and commissioning, power plant trouble shooting, and actively participating in new power plant design engineering activity including review and input to Heat and Material Balances, Process and Instrument Diagrams, HAZOPs, and actively contributing to design reviews, Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action, and other Multi-disciplinary group activities.

 

Responsibilities:

 

• Access, analyze and interpret historical and real time data from the FuelCell Energy SureSource power plant fleet.
• Understand and utilize technical documentation including equipment installation, operation and maintenance manuals; blower/compressor performance curves; piping and instrument diagrams, electrical 3-line drawings, heat and material balance, control narrative, control logic, etc.
• Take operational control of FuelCell Energy plants during commissioning, plant startups and non-standard conditions.
• Direct operation of individual power plants during critical periods by providing real time engineering support to maintain safe and effective plant operations.
• Provide on-call Engineering support for FuelCell Energy plants
• Provide engineering recommendations for the operation, service, design and manufacture of all FuelCell Energy products.
• Continue development of procedures and best practices for the operation and analysis of the FuelCell energy SureSource power plant fleet.
• Communicate effectively with and direct internal and external technical resources including: Mechanical, Electrical, instrumentation and controls engineers, field service technician, external contractor and others as needed.
• Generate and Present technical and non-technical reports for FuelCell Energy internal and external partners.
• Conduct and Report on product final acceptance testing.

Qualifications:

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in related engineering field

 

Experience:  8+ years’ experience technical problem solving on complex industrial, power generation or petrochemical process; development and implementation of test procedures and interpretation of results. Process control and instrumentation troubleshooting preferred.

 

 

Special Skills:

 

• Demonstrable understanding whole system process control and troubleshooting is core to the position.
• Experience with power generation, rotating equipment and instrumentation and control systems, preferred.  
• The ability to interpret data into an understanding of physical systems (chemical, electrochemical, mechanical and fluids) to form engineering recommendation for the optimization of operational longevity and power production.
