This is an exciting time to join SMUD as key member of the Power Generation Engineering Department. SMUD is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer who will be located at Rancho Seco (in Herald, California) and whose primary focus will be supporting the decommissioning of this nuclear site.

Mechanical Engineers at SMUD may have the opportunity to support many functions as outlined Essential Functions and Duties; however, this position will be heavily focused on the following:

Nuclear Fuel and Radioactive Materials

• Coordinates, integrates, and manages programs under the site 10CFR72 license for nuclear fuel
• Ensures safe and cost-effective storage and control of nuclear fuel and radioactive materials
• Plans schedules and controls surveillance and routine tests, preventive and corrective maintenance, and inspections
• Monitors and evaluates developments in the industry and the Department of Energy relative to storage and eventual disposition of nuclear fuel and GTCC radioactive waste
• Develops proposals for SMUD to achieve the most favorable and cost-effective removal or acceptance of the fuel and GTCC waste by DOE, and of off-site disposal of radioactive waste
• Acts as lead for Licensing activities including monitoring and evaluating changing NRC regulations and working with industry groups to develop actions to favorably influence the outcome; develops and implements cost-effective compliance strategies; responsible for maintaining nuclear-related procedures and programs required by the applicable licenses issued by NRC

Management of Nuclear Programs

• Directly responsible for the maintenance and implementation of all programs and procedures required to comply with NRC-issued licenses including Physical Protection Plan, Protection of Safeguards Information, Special Nuclear Materials Management, Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program, Radiation Protection Program, Emergency Plan, Radioactive Waste Management, document control, and the Quality Assurance Program for compliance purposes
• Acts as Reviewing Official for determining trustworthiness and reliability of SMUD and contracted employees for approving applicable security clearances

Oversight of Nuclear Programs

• Provides oversight to assure the adequacy of engineering related to nuclear fuel and radioactive waste storage; maintains design configuration integrity, the Quality Assurance Audit Program provided by Internal Audit, the nuclear Emergency Planning program provided by Protection, Safety and Environmental Services, and Maintenance provided by General Services

Safety and Environmental Protection

• Assists in managing programs to protect employees, the public, and the environment including Special Nuclear Materials, Radiation Protection, Radiological Environmental Monitoring, Emergency Planning, General Employee Training for licensed Rancho Seco facilities access and site legacy condition materials controls programs

Purpose

Performs and leads the performance of mechanical, civil and electrical design engineering and project management for construction of a variety of major projects for SMUD generation units; supervises staff in the development, implementation, marketing and operation of SMUD's Commercial and Residential New Construction programs and delivery of energy efficient design services, technical expertise and builder/developer construction incentives; ensures reliable and efficient generation operations for SMUD.
