The Technical Specialist for OBD Regulatory Compliance and Standards is required to navigate the complex landscape of automotive regulatory compliance, particularly concerning On-Board Diagnostics (OBD), Advanced Clean Cars II (ACCII) Data Standardization, EU7 Regulatory standards and the emerging China7 standards. They will take the initiative to report and resolve critical issues, develop and document new processes, and ensure that all teams are well-equipped to meet the latest regulatory demands from agencies like the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
What you'll do...
- Lead the definition, development, and implementation of robust global diagnostic and data requirements for the Propulsion Software and Diagnostic Department.
- Communicate the status of regulatory requirements and development of engineering requirements in design reviews and management escalation reviews.
- Collaborate with global gas, hybrid, diesel software development, calibration, and E&SC teams to plan and implement software to meet new requirements on time with high quality.
- Plan software and compliance targets for new regulatory requirements or with potential OBD compliance issues.
- Represent Ford's interests by leading and actively participating in SAE standardization committees (e.g., J1979, J1930, J1699, J2012) to shape future OBD and diagnostic standards.
- Negotiate effectively with industry (AAI) and E&SC and regulatory bodies regarding technical details in OBD monitoring or communication.
- Organize and lead OBD Deficiency and Concern resolution globally, driving root cause analysis and ensuring effective corrective actions.
- Guide OBD Software Subsystem Engineers and Diagnostic Staff towards compliant solutions.
- Use JIRA to triage and prioritize a backlog of potential OBD deficiencies and concerns for calibration, software, and hardware.
- Plan OBD regulatory phase-ins to meet compliance with new OBD regulations while continuously reviewing and modifying to align the cycle plan changes. Strategically plan and manage OBD regulatory phase-ins, ensuring timely compliance with new regulations and adapting plans based on evolving product cycle plans.
- Keep up with diagnostic and data requirements that are not strictly OBD/emission-related to adequately plan for Ford. Keep up with diagnostic and data requirements that are not strictly OBD/emission related to inform and shape future Ford strategies and product development.
- Develop training for controls and software to understand OBD requirements or data requirements.
- Understand communication standards and prepare new Ford proposals when required for data, data signals, or DTCs, or changes to existing standards. Deeply understand and interpret communication standards, presenting and advocating for new Ford proposals or modifications to existing standards related to data, data signals, and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
- Approve all new data requests in GMRDB (Global Master Reference Database)
- Collaborate with the Network Communications team to develop standardized terms for hardware or software signals that comply with the required OBD communication standards.
You'll have…
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a or foreign equivalency degree, or a combination of equivalent experience and education.
- 5 years of Regulatory (CARB, EU) OBD experience, powertrain controls software background preferred.
- 2+ years experience using Jira to drive issues to closure
- 2+ years of experience with Regulatory diagnostics requirement development using Jama
- 3+ years Diagnostics Design experience
- 2+ years of experience supporting critical applications in an “always on” environment.
