As part of the empathy core, you will learn to systematically identify elements that embody an empathic response using an evidence-based qualitative labeling system. In short, you will contribute to the core technology of our product - defining empathy.
This will involve:
- Attend training online to learn what makes conversations empathic
- Label interesting conversations to identify moments of empathy
- Attend team meetings online
- Ask questions, observe commentary, and communicate regularly with your team and the rest of the company on Slack
- Maintain reliability (in the statistical sense) with a current empathy labeling team
About you
You have a track record of being a proactive, reliable person that balances resolving problems on their own and consulting with supervisors. Consistency, communication, reliability, and follow-through are important at mpathic. Interns completing clinical or research practicum or post-doc are welcome to apply and we can work with you to meet the requirements of your program.
We require:
- Ability to telecommute (e.g., reliable internet access)
- Experience in counseling, psychology, or social work
- Completed an introductory course in listening skills
Nice but not a requirement:
- Experience with qualitative clinical coding systems in research or clinical practice
- Enrolled in or completed a masters or doctoral degree in psychology, counseling, social work or similar
- Demonstrated history of remote work, telecommuting
- Interest in NLP, AI, ML, speech signal processing and other automated systems of assessing human behavior
- Comfort or past experience with Slack

How you'll work
This position is available under the supervision of Amber Jolley-Paige, PhD, LCPC., VP of Clinical Product AI. This position will have access to observing and participating in research and product development for labeling.
Flexible schedule
10-15 hours per week for a duration of one year with the option to extend. Highly flexible schedule outside of regular weekly meetings with data labeling team and/or supervisor. Your supervisor is on EST time and you will be expected to align with her schedule for meetings.
Flexible location
mpathic is a remote-first company with cross-functional teams based throughout the US. We welcome applicants from all 50 states. Preference to East-Coast time zone or locations near Boston and Baltimore to align with team schedules.

Hourly Wage
$30 per hour base salary dependent on experience; experienced coders with prior training will receive a higher salary commensurate with experience. We are committed to equal pay; learn more here.
