  • Employment Type: Full-Time
  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Schedule: Varies by location and unit
  • Weekends & Holidays: Rotating weekends and holidays required

About the Role

As a vital member of the bedside care team, IU Health is seeking compassionate and dedicated Patient Care Technicians also known as Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) to support our patients and clinical teams across multiple care settings.

In this role, you will help deliver an exceptional patient experience by anticipating patient needs and providing hands-on care that supports comfort, dignity, and safety. This includes assisting with personal care, mobility, nutrition, and maintaining a clean and supportive healing environment.

Patient Care Technicians work closely with bedside Registered Nurses (RNs) and play a critical role in observing patients and reporting changes in condition to ensure timely and appropriate care.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may vary by unit and include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing direct, hands-on care to patients, including: 
    • Assisting with bathing, grooming, toileting, and mobility
    • Encouraging ambulation using appropriate safety measures
    • Assisting with meal ordering and patient nutrition needs
    • Providing fresh linens, gowns, and maintaining patient environments
  • Supporting bedside RNs by: 
    • Obtaining and documenting vital signs
    • Observing and reporting changes in patient condition or behavior
    • Communicating relevant information promptly to the RN or charge nurse
  • Ensuring patient safety by utilizing appropriate safety techniques, including: 
    • Gait belts
    • Bed and chair alarms
    • Remaining within arm’s reach when assisting patients with mobility
  • Maintaining professionalism, compassion, and effective communication in a fast‑paced care environment

Required Qualifications & Skills

Certifications & Training

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required 
    • OR attainment upon completion of the IU Health PCA education program
  • Additional advanced life support certifications may be required based on department or specialty
