This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. 

  

Lunar Permanence's Zero Boil Off Team is tasked with one of the most persistent and difficult technical problems of our era - making hydrogen and oxygen storable propellants. Leading the cross-functional technical team will be an impactful position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Technical Leadership of the Cryocooler able to review the technical work of other system systems and product teams, detect subtle flaws, and provide substantial design improvement recommendations.
  • Lead technical team product definition and associated tasking to develop and deliver systems, and products that meet mission objectives and satisfy requirements. Directly manage systems and analysis teams.
  • Develop technical team risk mitigation, verification, and validation approach to ensure rapid execution. Ensure prototyping effort appropriately targets risk areas.
  • Interface between the Zero Boil Off Director and Technical Team to balance the technical solution against cost, schedule, and risk.
  • Apply heuristic and functional decomposition techniques to scope the design and development of a product based on program objectives.
  • Define and track system budgets and technical performance metrics throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Element Lead of Engineering Review/Change Board
  • Monitor technical progress, requirements, deliverables, and risks as well as review recommendations for change with program management.
  • Coordinate with Lunar Systems Engineering to define, coordinate, and continuously improve upon systems engineering processes.
  • Able to quickly understand and report on a variety of technical tasks across the team relating to, but not limited to, configuration changes, technical risks, failure root cause assessments, waivers, and other variances against plan.
  • Coordinate with the Zero Boil Off Director, Sales, and other vehicle Lead Systems Engineers to develop, and maintain alignment on, the Zero Boil Off product roadmap.
  • Work independently toward long-range objectives without appreciable direction and determine the technical objectives of tasks to develop approaches to technical solutions.
  • Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science or related technical subject area
  • Experience designing, integrating, testing and operating space flight vehicle systems
  • Technical Team leadership experience
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
  • 8 + years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep technical background in one or more of the following: payload integration, cryogenics, turbomachinery, avionics, controls,  gas bearings, valves, fluids & thermal analysis.
  • Strong background in systems engineering tools (Jama, Cameo, DNG) and their practical application
  • Demonstrated configuration management experience
  • M.S. degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science or related technical subject area
  • 12+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience with the development and execution of a large-scale system integration and verification of autonomous spaceflight systems
  • Experience supporting testbeds for spaceflight systems
Compensation range for on site WA applicants is$167,088—$233,923.20 USD
