Senior Probation & Parole Officer

Overview

Performs Administrative and supervisory work required in the planning and delivery and evaluation of correctional services. 

Curriculum development, staff development and training work at a professional level involving the development and implementation of both generic and specific need training packages and programs. Assignments of a specific Senior Probation and Parole Officer (SPPO) may relate largely to a given program area, although involvement throughout a department or across departmental lines is expected. Incumbents are expected to be subject matter experts in program rules and procedures and deliver training curriculums for the major programs administered by the department. Extensive liaison occurs with departmental managers and staff, contractual parties, and program clients. 

 Duties include designing, administering, and monitoring services for a client's immediate and long-range needs. Duties also include addressing the needs of victims and the community through restorative case planning. Duties include providing training, professional development, and supervision to DOC field staff. 

Incumbents will engage in risk control and risk management services as part of a supervision team in a Probation and Parole Office for the Department of Corrections. 
Incumbents will be required to attend mandatory training and maintain certifications and training requirements as determined by the department. All employees of the Agency of Human Services
perform their respective functions adhering to four key practices: customer service, holistic service, strengths-based relationships and results orientation. 

Supports and directs staff, volunteers and contracted providers in the case management and case planning functions of risk management and conditional compliance response supervision. 
Participates in the development, scheduling and delivering of training to field staff, both local and department wide. Solicits supervisor's cooperation in providing an atmosphere to facilitate operational changes and implementation of skills and behaviors developed by employee development exercises. Arranges space and equipment for specific events, prepares notices, and maintains records of completed training. 

Plans, supervises, provides case management services, support services, and coordinates activities and programs for offenders in a community corrections setting. Provides supervision and technical assistance to other probation officers and community correctional officers in a unit or office, or as part of delivering on-the-job training to new Probation Officers. 

Act as a field training officer (FTO) for new staff. Deliver trainings and develop training curriculum for office staff. Assists District Managers and Correctional Program Supervisors in data analysis, quality assurance, program effectiveness and supervision of field operations. May be responsible for the supervision of programs or units within the probation and parole office.

Direct supervision and case management of offenders assigned to them in a community, office, and/or institutional setting. Will have contact and appointments that provide direct supervision and case management of offenders assigned to them. Will have contact and visit with offenders, family members, offender supports, and community members in a field office, correctional facility, and in the community. Interviews professionals and community members regarding assigned cases. 

Develops case plan designed to reduce recidivism and promote pro-social skills. As a member of a treatment team, formulates case plans to help individual and family functioning. Assist offenders while incarcerated to develop appropriate reentry plans. Coordinates with treatment teams for effective implementation of case plans and arranges for periodic case plan reviews.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in a field office, correctional and community setting and includes frequent interaction with potentially dangerous correctional clients. High stress may be present, as is some danger of assault. Evening, weekend, and alternating shift duty required to provide necessary services and supervision.
