Duties, Responsibilities & Other

Essential Duties and Responsibilities*:

 

The Energy-Engineering Designer (Engineering Designer) will design and prepare drawings for various utility projects including natural gas, power, transmission, distribution, substation, clean generation and energy storage projects. The Engineering Designer will work closely under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, contributing to engineering calculations, drafting, and coordination of multiple engineering disciplines. This role requires a knowledge of engineering principals, MicroStation, AutoCAD, GIS systems, pole loading or other specialty software, as well as strong communication, technical writing skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

 

Key Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in MicroStation, AutoCAD, or Revit for preparing detailed engineering drawings across disciplines.
  • Ability to develop and modify plans in alignment with utility design standards and project requirements.
  • Familiarity with GIS platforms for spatial data analysis and infrastructure planning.
  • Experience with pole loading software (e.g., Pole foreman, O-Calc, SPIDAcalc).
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program, with a solid foundation in core engineering principles.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience supporting energy-utility-related projects.
  • Competence in developing design drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for preparing technical reports, design documentation, and data tracking tools.
  • Capable of producing accurate and concise technical writing to support project deliverables and communication.
  • Experience conducting site visits, collecting accurate field data through measurements, sketches, and photographs, and the ability to translate field data into actionable engineering inputs.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to manage drawings, revisions, and project documentation across multiple tasks.
  • Ability to track project milestones and deliverables with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with engineers, project managers, and clients.
  • Comfortable working in multidisciplinary teams and contributing to a collaborative project environment.
  • Capable of coordinating with multiple engineering disciplines (e.g., electrical, civil, structural) to develop integrated design packages.
  • Experience supporting project meetings, team coordination, meeting minutes, and sub-consultant collaboration.
