The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.
The AHA Journals Scientific Publishing team is looking for a part-time Scientific Journals Editorial Intern interested in developing experience in scientific journal publishing and peer review. The selected candidate will learn best practices for and contribute to journal editorial office workflow, coordinate projects to streamline the manuscript submission system, and manage documentation for the AHA’s Scientific Statements and Guidelines, as well as other tasks as identified.

Internship Overview:
Time Commitment: 25 hours per week
Internship Duration: 1/26/2026 - 5/1/2026
Location: Remote
Salary: $23.00 per hour
Internship Outcomes:

Responsibilities
Tasks could include things like the following:
Manuscript Submission and Peer Review
- Process submitted manuscripts through peer review according to editorial office best practices.
- Audit and organize templates and reports across the journal submission sites.
- Develop and implement consistent language for instruction pages.
American Heart Association Scientific Statements and Guidelines
- Compile and review author and reviewer disclosure statements.
- Manage reprint permission requests and relevant communications with journal publisher.
Special Projects
- Contribute to journals' social media activities as needed.
- Formalize and document staff training material.
- Assist management with special projects as needed/assigned.
Qualifications
- Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree publishing, technical writing, health communication, biology or other science-related fields.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated excellence in written communication skills.
- Strong customer service and organizational skills.
- Experience managing projects preferred.
- Experience working with databases and electronic reporting tools preferred (For example, Customer Relationship Management tools, e-journal press, editorial manager, etc.)
- Excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with social media platforms.
- Required Equipment: Reliable Wi-Fi connection.
- Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 9am-5pm.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
