Job Summary:

JOB SUMMARY

This position is a per diem SLP position for work on an NIH funded project (PI Antje Mefferd). It focuses on the articulation impairment profiles of adults with dysarthria and examines perceptual speech characteristics and their underlying speech motor
impairments of the lips, tongue, and jaw in patients with various neurological conditions (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis).

Location: Vanderbilt University Medical Center (main campus as well as Green Hills MS specialty clinic)

Schedule: Monday–Friday (Fridays required)

About the Role

Vanderbilt Health is seeking a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to join a cutting-edge NIH-funded research project focused on articulation impairments in adults with dysarthria. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of clinical care and academic research, contributing to groundbreaking studies on neurological speech disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, ALS, Huntington’s disease, and MS.

Schedule: Monday–Friday business hours. Fridays are required as those are clinic days.

Minimum Hours: 16 hours per week, additional hours as needed

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Active Tennessee SLP License

  • Availability on Fridays

  • Strong inter-personal skills

  • Ability to quickly connect with patients

  • Highly motivated to support recruitment efforts

  • Attention to detail and organizational skills

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with academic settings

  • Clinical experience with adult motor speech disorders

  • Keen interest in perceptual assessment of dysarthria

KEY RESPONSIBLITIES

Dysarthria Classification Project

  • Recruitment of research participants, for example during their care visits at VUMC specialty clinics (Huntington’s disease clinic, ALS clinic, MS clinic)

  • Conducting in-person screenings in clinical settings as well as phone screenings

  • Scheduling research participants

  • Assisting with data collections in the lab

  • Conducting clinical dysarthria assessments (e.g., perceptual speech characteristics based on the Mayo clinic dysarthria rating scale, intelligibility estimates, severity estimates)

  • Participation in scoring consensus meetings and frequently leading these meetings

General Expectations

  • Desire to work closely and productively with staff on the research team and clinic

  • Bringing a high level of attention of detail to all aspects of the role

  • Willingness to learn new skills (e.g., kinematic data collection and analysis)

  • Interest in research and desire to work in an academic research environment

  • Ability to manage lab activities and lab materials (e.g., back-up data, organize data, help with data analysis)
