The Role:

We’re looking for a hands-on Senior AI Engineer to join a new team we are incubating at our Mountain View, CA headquarters. In this founding role, you’ll build and own actual product features from end to end, not just AI models. Additionally, you’ll work closely with product managers, data scientists, and other engineers in both the U.S. and India to design, build, and ship the next generation of AI-powered commerce solutions, including Ally and OCC.

Why this role matters

  • Impact from day one: Join a small, high-impact U.S. team working on CommerceIQ’s newest AI-driven offerings.
  • Hands-on AI development: Build and deploy real AI tools, not just consume pre-built services.
  • Global exposure: Collaborate with a talented, distributed engineering organization serving the world’s largest brands.

This is an onsite role based out of our Mountain View, CA headquarters. You will be expected to work onsite 5 days per week if hired.

What You'll Do:

  • Build retrieval & agentic systems: design RAG pipelines over brand, retail, and media data; add tools/plans; manage long-running jobs and guardrails.
  • Train/fine-tune models: supervise fine-tunes & LoRA; evaluate with robust offline metrics and online A/Bs; reduce hallucinations with policy & eval gates.
  • Design & build features: Develop scalable backend services (Java preferred; Python also welcome) and contribute to full-stack features, collaborating with cross-functional teams to bring AI-powered capabilities to market.
  • Work with AI at the code level: Write code that integrates and deploys AI models (including large-language-model APIs), focusing on building tools that deliver real-time insights to users.
  • Collaborate globally: Partner daily with our Bangalore-based engineering team to align on architecture, code quality, and delivery.
  • Drive technical quality: Contribute to design discussions, code reviews, and best-practice adoption for performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Own end-to-end delivery: Take features from design through deployment, ensuring they meet business requirements and user needs.
  • Create leverage: use AI coding tools judiciously, document playbooks, up-level the broader engineering org on LLM best practices.

What You'll Bring:

  • 4+ years building production software; 2+ years applied ML/LLM work shipping user-facing features.
  • Hands-on experience with RAG (vector stores, embeddings, chunking), prompt engineering, and LLM orchestration (e.g., LangChain/LlamaIndex or custom).
  • Proficiency in Java or a similar JVM language; strong Python skills and familiarity with AI/ML frameworks are a plus.
  • Experience developing and deploying AI-powered applications, including integrating with LLM APIs.
  • Knowledge of cloud-native architectures (AWS/GCP/Azure), microservices, event-driven systems, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across time zones.
  • Startup mindset; comfortable working in a fast-moving environment and wearing multiple hats.
  • Expertise with data pipelines (batch/stream), feature stores, and MLOps (experiment tracking, model registry, CI/CD) on a major cloud.
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.

Compensation and Benefits:

The typical base pay range for this role in Mountain View, CA is: $176,000 - $198,000/per year. This role also qualifies for an annual bonus and in
