Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has a District Mechanic Supervisor position available. As a District Mechanic Supervisor at the Nebraska Department of Transportation, you'll be part of a supportive team that takes great pride in ensuring equipment is on the road, where it belongs, to help support the incredible freedom of travel throughout the State of Nebraska. The position is one of the district’s administrative staff that performs a leadership role within the district. This position is responsible for the daily operations of a vehicle fleet, including related safety, maintenance, leadership, technical skills, cost management, communication, problem solving, driver management, customer service, and reporting. The District Mechanic Supervisor also serves as the primary contact concerning the vehicle fleet and operations; oversees all vehicles, equipment, and related assets; provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees at the entry or intermediate levels; and is responsible for operation of a fully-fledged vehicle maintenance facility and 10 satellite equipment repair facilities.

Pay rate range of $29.181 per hour to $41.687 per hour. Pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints, if approved.

Job Duties:

• Supervises skilled mechanical work involving the inspection and repair of gasoline and diesel powered automotive, heavy truck, heavy equipment, and related equipment.
• Assures that established vehicle and equipment preventative maintenance programs are carried out.
• Inspects vehicles and equipment to determine adherence to proper operation, maintenance, repair, and service procedures.
• Advises, assists, and instructs mechanics on unusual repairs.
• Expedites procurement of repair parts, materials, tools, and equipment.
• Writes repair orders; maintains service and inventory records.
• Inspects new equipment and instructs mechanics in specialized repairs of service procedures required.
• Inspects condition of vehicles and equipment to determine feasibility of repair.
• Assists District Maintenance Superintendent in determining vehicle and equipment needs.
• Tests and diagnoses equipment problems; performs major engine overhaul; overhaul transmissions; diagnoses rear end and hydraulic problems and repair; performs metal fabrication and major metal repairs; performs minor and major repair on all department equipment; may need to perform repair work in field.
• Manages the repair and upkeep of a diverse fleet of equipment in 5 superintendents' regions to include the design, bid, acquisition, deployment, repair, surplus and disposal.
• Communicates, coaches, and directs mechanics in the proper repair methods and procedures and operation of equipment and tools.
