Job Description
WHAT YOU’LL DO
As a Generation Resource Planning Analyst, you will support strategic planning efforts that shape the future of AEP’s power generation portfolio. You’ll develop and analyze resource plans to meet customer demand, market and regulatory requirements. Your work will directly inform Integrated Resource Plans (IRPs), company strategy, budgeting, and regulatory filings.
This role offers the opportunity to work independently and as a strategic project manager to contribute to high-impact decisions, and, as you gain experience, serve as a subject matter expert across departments and with external stakeholders.
· Support and lead generation resource planning studies, including capacity, energy, and renewable optimization.
· Contribute to the development of Integrated Resource Plans (IRPs) by preparing inputs, analyzing outputs, and producing narrative and visual reports.
· Build financial models to evaluate generation asset acquisitions, including net present value, annualized cost, and benefit-cost ratios.
· Maintain and enhance modeling and automation tools; implement process improvements.
· Stay current on market rules and requirements (e.g., PJM, SPP) and ensure modeling reflects those standards.
· Evaluate supply and demand-side alternatives, including energy efficiency, demand response, and intermittent resources.
· Prepare and present detailed analyses to internal teams and leadership.
· Support development of testimony and serve as a resource in regulatory proceedings.
· Collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders.
· Build and maintain capacity/load/reserve schedules and related databases.
· Create custom reports and procedures to meet specific planning needs.
· Benchmark industry trends and assess their impact on resource planning.

Technical Skills and Tools
Candidates should demonstrate strong proficiency in:
· Microsoft Excel – advanced modeling and data analysis
· Power BI – dashboard creation and visual storytelling
· PowerPoint – effective presentation development
· Familiarity with Python, SAS, VBA, or MS Access is a plus
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Based on education, experience, interview and internal equity, this opportunity will be filled at either grade/title.
Resource Planning Analyst Principal (grade 8): Base Salary = $99K - $128K
Education: Bachelor's degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics); OR,
Bachelor’s degree in a non-analytical field with two years of analytical experience.
Experience: three (3) years as a Resource Planning Analyst Sr; OR,
Nine (9) years of related resource planning experience (in addition to the experience identified above), specifically in generating plant operations or construction, renewable energy, energy efficiency, commercial operations, RTO operations, or transmission engineering/operations. An advanced degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics) will be considered to be 2 years of relevant experience.
