SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANT:

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Facilities Management and Planning administers custodial services; building maintenance and alterations; utilities operations (heating and cooling); landscape services; capital construction review as it pertains to future maintenance;carpool operations; property control and inventory; delivery services; stores operations and other support activities necessary for the benefit of administration and academic areas of the campus community. The SOU campus includes 175 acres of grounds, 140 of which are under active use and maintenance. Facilities Management maintains 21 major buildings comprising over 1.3 million square feet of building space. The department is staffed by approximately 45 full time personnel and is responsible for approximately 9% of the total campus budget. This position is responsible for repairs andmaintenance to all utility systems on campus.

Minimum Requirements

  • Three years of general building maintenance experience in one or more of the following trade areas:  carpentry, electrical, mechanical, painting, plumbing, and welding.

Note: Some positions may require licensure or certification in a specific trade area.

Preferred Requirements

  • Four of more years of general maintenance experience at a high school, or industrial setting
    License/Certifications (any): Limited Electrical License, CFC refrigerant certification, plumbing license, electrical license,welding certificate

Essential Functions

Duties - The following examples are typical work activities that are meant to illustrate the general range of work functions and are not meant to be all-inclusive or restrictive:

(45%) Duties Include

  • Repair controls when needed for the heating and cooling system throughout the campus. These consist of both electric and pneumatic systems, modulating steam and water valves, mixing valves, thermostats, and air dampers. Performs various journey level trades work such as installing and repairing steam pipes, valves, fittings, stove pipes, grates and other sheet metal articles; uses tools and equipment of various trades such as pipe cutters, saws, drills, planes, sanders, shears and acetylene and heliarc welding equipment; drives truck to run errands and deliver supplies; coordinates preventive maintenance program through scheduled inspection and servicing of equipment and facilities.
