Description

 

The Department of Health, Sport, and Human Physiology is seeking a Research Assistant with phlebotomy skills to work in the Microvascular Physiology Lab under the direction of Professor Anna Stanhewicz. The lab conducts research to understand the mechanisms underlying increased cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk in human research participants. The Research Assistant will work with the research team, including other research staff and graduate and undergraduate students, to assist in conducting research projects in the mechanisms of microvascular dysfunction. 

This is a two-year specified term position with the possibility of extension for up to one additional year. The position is anticipated to begin in mid-to-late April.

This position not eligible for University sponsorship for employment authorization.

This is a 100% on-site position on the University of Iowa campus.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform standard and moderately complex research procedures in human subjects, including phlebotomy.
  • Manage the safety of human research participants.
  • Coordinate research subject participation.
  • Oversee research participant compliance with study protocols, including medication adherence.
  • Work with and train other laboratory personnel or students in research techniques and compliance measures.
  • Act as Laboratory Safety Officer and point of contact for Environmental Health & Safety.
  • Assist in preparation of reports to IRB, NIH, FDA, and other relevant regulatory boards and agencies.

Qualifications

 

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, physiology, kinesiology, or nursing awarded prior to the position start date OR an equivalent combination of experience so long as experience includes experience with phlebotomy.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skill in phlebotomy and/or phlebotomy certification, licensure, or training.
  • Demonstrated experience with word processing and spreadsheet applications and the ability to learn new technical skills quickly.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and experience keeping records with accuracy.
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical or laboratory experience in the areas of biology, chemistry, medicine, pharmacology, physiology, or related field.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working with human research participants, patients, clients, or customers in a professional role.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe, healthy, and functional working environment in the lab.
  • Experience working with electronic medical records such as Epic.
