Boston West is seeking a Medical Director (Emergency or Specialty) who is energized by both clinical excellence and leadership growth—and who believes that culture is not a side project, but the foundation of great medicine.

We currently provide 24-hour Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery & Cardiology, with a strategic vision to thoughtfully expand specialty services in partnership with our leadership team.


The Role: What You’ll Do

Medical Quality & Clinical Excellence

  • Provide medical leadership to ensure the highest standards of patient care, safety, and clinical innovation
  • Develop, maintain, and evolve medical policies, protocols, and best practices
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and support a culture of continuous learning
  • Address patient safety concerns with transparency, accountability, and collaboration
  • Maintain strong, trust-based relationships with referring veterinarians (RDVMs)

Team Development & Leadership

  • Partner closely with the Hospital Director and clinical managers to foster a team-first, psychologically safe clinical environment
  • Recruit, mentor, and retain high-quality veterinarians who align with Boston West values
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and meaningful quarterly check-ins with DVMs
  • Oversee externship and internship education, mentorship, and evaluations
  • Support professional growth, CE engagement, and leadership development across the doctor team

Culture, Community & Communication

  • Actively model and reinforce a respectful, inclusive, and positive workplace culture
  • Foster strong relationships with referring hospitals and the broader veterinary community
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with medical staff
  • Facilitate and participate in regular medical meetings and leadership forums
  • Attend and actively engage in Medical Director Advisory Council (MDAC) meetings

Hospital Operations & Strategic Growth

  • Partner with the Hospital Director in day-to-day operations and long-term strategy
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen existing services and thoughtfully introduce new ones
  • Provide medical input into hospital development, marketing initiatives, and outreach
  • Collaborate on equipment, medication, and product selection
  • Uphold accountability to best-practice medicine, medical records, and compliance standards
  • Participate in leadership training and relationship-building opportunities alongside hospital leadership
