JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Our research group belongs to the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State University and focuses on the development of space hardware within the context of the NASA space program. We have an immediate opening for a Nanofabrication Engineer (Research Engineer – Intermediate Professional) who will assist our current team in process development and fabrication of diffractive optics, as well as associated projects. The applicant will be expected to work on a variety of processes including but not limited to electron-beam lithography, dry and wet etching, thin-film deposition, and characterization (SEM, AFM). The majority of the candidate’s work will take place in the world-class Nanofabrication Laboratory within the Millennium Science Center at Penn State University.
Core responsibilities will include:
Working with the current team on a variety of nanofabrication processes.
Documenting the work performed and reporting to the team lead.
Additional responsibilities might include:
Leading specific projects.
Light administrative work including researching and ordering of wafers and other supplies and tracking wafer inventory.
Education and Experience
Ideal candidates will have a track record of experience in micro/nanofabrication at an academic or industrial cleanroom. Experience in process development and troubleshooting, device layout software, computer programming, and data analysis is strongly suggested for this role.
The candidate must be comfortable working in a highly specialized cleanroom environment wearing cleanroom attire and personal protective equipment. Candidates should also expect to work with hazardous chemicals and gases and should possess the knowledge of how to handle those safely.
Overall, this position requires excellent organization and planning. The candidate must be detail-oriented, able to follow standard procedures, able to work with the current team and others as well as independently, and should have excellent written and oral communication skills.
