Job Description:

The Special Project Assistant Archivist at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum assists in the arrangement and description of newsprint materials in the San Francisco Academy of Comic Art Collection (SFACA) following the More Product, Less Process (MPLP) model. Under the direction of the BICLM Curator for Collections, assesses physical condition and performs processing, rehousing and description activities. This project heavily utilizes Archivists’ Toolkit and other metadata management tools currently in use by University Libraries. This position requires strong organizational, communication, time management, and workflow collaborative skills to ensure work is consistent with work done by previous positions. Collaborates with the BICLM Head Curator of Comics and Cartoon Art, Book Depository Manager, Public Services staff, and Special Collections Cataloger. Consults and collaborates with others throughout the library as appropriate. Position reports to BICLM Curator for Collections and may assist in supervision of student assistants.

This is a term position lasting up to 18-months. This position is expected to work on-site on the Columbus campus.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in History, Art History or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 1-years’ experience working in a library or archival setting. Effective oral/written/interpersonal communication skills. Ability to follow directions and attention to detail. Effective time management. Ability to work both collaboratively in a team processing environment and at times independently. Ability to occasionally work in archival storage conditions where temperatures are approximately 62 degrees F and ability to lift 40 lbs. and push carts weighing up to 80 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Desired Qualifications:

.Data entry experience. At least 2-years’ experience processing complex archival collections. Experience using Archivist’s Toolkit or similar software. Knowledge of proper handling of fragile and brittle paper. Familiarity with the American comic strip and early twentieth century American newspapers.
