About the role

Job Description:

The temporary Audio Engineer/A1 provides professional audio support for productions and events produced by Boston Conservatory at Berklee, focusing on those taking place in the Mainstage and Zack Box Theaters. As part of the Performance Services team, the A1 will be responsible for sound system engineering, live mixing, playback, and video integration as assigned for specific productions. The A1 will work closely with the full Performance Services team, including audio staff, technical direction, lighting, stage management, costumes, and Concert Services. This position will work closely with the Theater, Dance, and Music divisions to ensure excellent sound quality in all areas.

The temporary Audio Engineer will work full-time (35 hours per week) through the Spring 2026 semester, with possibility to extend. This position is paid hourly and non-exempt, with nights and weekends required. The hiring range for this position is $28 - 32 per hour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

   Act as A1 for musical theater, music, theater, dance concerts, dance juries and opera events in the BCB Mainstage and Zack Box as assigned.

   Coordinate with creative and production teams for each production to determine audio needs, including specific equipment and process for installation and strike.

   Supervise the installation of audio equipment necessary for each production.

   Manage video monitor elements and Clear-Com system for productions, including conductor cameras, audio monitors, video monitors, headsets, etc.

   Work with the Technical Director and Projections Technician to install projections equipment and facilitate projections playback as needed.

   Facilitate playback for events, which may include creating QLab files for audio and projections, editing music, or other work.

   Ensure that proper safety measures and adequate housekeeping are observed by all under their direction. Enforce all applicable EPA, USITT, and OSHA standards in the workplace. Adhere to Boston Fire Department codes.

   Coordinate the installation and strike of backline equipment and orchestra pit microphones as consistent with the orchestra pit plot, working with the Concert Services team when necessary.

   Record voice over as necessary.

   Maintain housekeeping and basic repairs of the BCB Mainstage audio equipment and control booth.

 

 

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

      At least 3 years experience as Sound Engineer for theater, dance, and/or opera productions.

      Exceptional engineering skills for musicals, prior work with digital consoles, including Yamaha CL and TF series and Behringer X32s, mixing wireless mics in live performances, installation of visual/audio monitors and other audio equipment including Clear-Com.

      Experience with QLab, Dante Systems, Audio Architect, D&B Audiotechnik R1, QSC Q-SYS and other audio software.

      Experience with basic wiring and basic repair of equipment preferred.

      Prior work with students or volunteers in theater or a performing arts environment is preferred.

      BA in Theater or other degree equivalent preferred.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversees A2/Assistant Audio Engineer, Production Technicians, student workers on specific calls as needed

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

BCB Mainstage, control booth, office space, Zack Box and other venues as requested.
