The MUSIC E&S Assistant Underwriter will under direct supervision, support business growth and profitability goals in a fast-paced environment with a team. Support the daily service demands for existing risks of agents and underwriting team. Will form an understanding of underwriting system transactions. Work within a letter of authority issued by the underwriting manager on assignments of low complexity, hazard grade, and premium.

  • Effectively manage the workflow list to ensure tasks are resolved within a timely manner and that open items are handled efficiently.
  • Gather, analyze and evaluate risk exposure using available resources (e.g. application, survey reports, MVR’s, loss history, industry publications such as SAGE, Data Cube, IRMI, and A.M. Best, and other information pertaining to business initiatives).
  • Respond to inquiries in a timely manner regarding coverage and policy adjustments based upon granted authority level.
  • Take necessary measures to obtain information needed to finalize inquiries/transactions.
  • Process all manual insurance endorsements, inspections and underwriting diaries assigned.
  • Apply knowledge of coverage forms, rating plans, underwriting appetite and guidelines in selection and pricing of individual risks, change requests, and open communication with internal and external customers.
  • Professionally respond to agent inquiries and efficiently utilize desktop tools, email, and chat functions quickly clearing simple and/or complex items from the system.
  • Reinforce the ease of doing business with MUSIC by meeting or exceeding agent expectations and service quality on a consistent basis.
  • Work within specific authority level to review work items in accordance with accepted underwriting guidelines. Refer all outside of authority to the appropriate level.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of coverage forms, rating plans and guidelines in the selection and pricing of work items.
  • Process or assist in the processing of renewal policies, endorsements, cancellations, reinstatements, reports, correspondence under the direction of assigned underwriters.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Proficient in the usage of all supplied desktop tools; rating system and email.
  • Display confidence and a willingness to take ownership of a request or problem.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to see the big picture while responding to changing conditions.
  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 1-3  years of Commercial Lines experience 

The expected starting salary range for this role is $41,000 - $62,000.  The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
