About the role

Job Description:

Role Summary/Purpose:

The SVP, Internal Audit is a strategic leader and critical member of the Internal Audit Senior Leadership Team (SLT).  This role will lead teams of experienced auditors providing control assurance over Risk, Compliance, AML/BSA, Models, Credit, and Growth risks.  The incumbent will also be responsible for driving enterprise coverage and assessments of the Risk Governance Framework, Compliance Risk Management (including AML/BSA).

 

In addition, the incumbent will assist the Chief Audit Executive (CAE) and the Audit Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on developing and executing on department strategies, engagement activities, and various initiatives throughout the year. This individual must be a strategic audit leader with technical capabilities to support the auditing of a complex and growing structure.  This role will report to the SVP, Internal Audit – IT & Ops, Risk, Credit, Growth.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Promote a culture of proactive Audit quality, influence a department-wide focus on innovation and elevation of assurance work, and identify and lead strategic opportunities to improve audit coverage, quality, and reporting across the department 
  • Develop a comprehensive, in-depth understanding of Synchrony's business including the Risk, Compliance, AML/BSA, Models, Credit, and Growth (Marketing and Products)
  • Drive and oversee Department coverage of enterprise programs including Risk Management, Compliance, and Models/EUCs
  • Own and coordinate annual risk assessments of the Risk Governance Framework and Compliance Risk Management (including AML/BSA). 
  • Understanding the key current and emerging risks within the subject areas and lead a team of resident subject matter experts to identify emerging risks and appropriate audit plan updates responsive to those risks. Leverage information to develop informed annual assessments of key risks across subject areas and input into identification and reporting of issue and risk themes and trends
  • Lead the development of a risk based and comprehensive annual plan and oversee the execution of the plan in line with department and regulatory expectations, ensuring timely completion, maintenance, and execution of the audit plan 
  • Lead, motivate, and develop team leaders and promote a culture of feedback and development
  • Foster strong, collaborative relationships with key stakeholders including management, board, external auditors, regulators 
  • Stay externally focused attending industry events, roundtables, and peer best practice sharing forums 
  • Identify meaningful recommendations and serving as a change agent that will make an immediate impact in the subject areas 
  • Expected to influence  Senior Management on matters which will have significant impacts on the subject areas 
  • Update coverage approach as necessary based on changes to SYF’s strategic initiatives 
  • Oversee the development of a continuous risk monitoring process relative to the subject areas 
  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelors or advanced degree in business, management, finance, or accounting with 12+ years of relevant experience working within an internal or external audit function or in a risk management, governance, surveillance or testing, or finance/accounting role; in lieu of a degree 15+ years of experience working within an internal or external audit function or in a risk management, governance, surveillance or testing, or finance/accounting role;
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or related IIA certification 
  • Strong understanding and experience in testing methodology, standards, and practices, including Institute of Internal Auditors standards 
  • Must be willing to travel up to 10% of the time
