Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, MI three times per week or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role

As a Steering System Engineer, you will be responsible to ensure that system engineering methods are applied during the creation, development, assessment, and verification of steering systems. The Steering Systems Engineer is responsible for specifying steering system requirements, analysis, benchmarking, development, test procedures, issue resolution, and verification to ensure our front and rear steering systems are world-class and exceed our customers’ expectations.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Develop and manage systems engineering deliverables (e.g., System Technical Specifications, DFMEA, HAZOP) and link them to subsystems.

  • Define, model, simulate, and test system requirements to ensure accuracy and completeness.

  • Communicate system requirements and issues to internal teams, suppliers, and manufacturing.

  • Promote feature commonization to reduce complexity.

  • Ensure all requirements are captured in the validation plan, understood by the validation team, and released in ETM.

  • Integrate new steering systems and features into future vehicle architectures.

  • Support vehicle development, integration, and performance activities for front and rear steering features.

  • Identify and resolve integration and performance issues throughout the development cycle.

  • Contribute to feature and system test procedure development.

  • Support sourcing activities through specification development and supplier technical reviews.

  • Conduct competitive benchmarking to inform feature and system performance requirements.

  • Assist with Advanced Technology Work (ATW) projects.

  • Stay current on emerging technologies and competitive products.

  • Support ride trips, clinics, and address assembly plant and field issues.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • BS in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Math or a related field of expertise

  • 5 or more years of post-graduation experience required with steering systems, electrical devices and controls

  • Understanding & experience with the development of chassis/steering/suspension software

  • Working knowledge of Control Systems

  • Understand the engineering theory and principles of Vehicle Dynamics

  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink (or similar)

  • Experience with Vehicle Dynamics simulation software (CarSim, Simpack, etc.)

  • Understanding of serial data communication & network concepts

  • Understanding of vehicle data collection tools: neoVI, Vector tools, ETAS

  • Working knowledge of Steering System development, integration, verification, & validation

  • Working knowledge of Steering System hardware design and failure modes

  • Working knowledge of system reliability, safety, monitoring, and diagnostic technologies and processes

  • Understanding of the end user’s experience with features on their vehicle

  • Ability to rapid prototype concept algorithms to support requirements development

  • Strong track record of solving complex problems and outlining the strategy by which others can solve a problem

  • Proactive / results driven individual with high levels of initiative

  • This position requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis and successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Report review

  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time, domestic and internationally

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop

  • Experience with calibration of control systems – Vehicle Chassis

  • Experience with Vehicle Dynamics test methods

  • Strong understanding of vehicle integration for chassis systems (e.g., powertrain, brakes, suspension, steering, driveline,...)
