General Notes
The University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences invites applications for its Excellence in Earth & Planetary Sciences Postdoctoral Fellows program. We are seeking individuals interested in conducting independent research in any field within the Earth and Planetary Sciences that aligns with or expands upon our existing research initiatives. Collaboration and mentorship are vital aspects of this position, and applicants must identify potential mentors and research groups within the department with whom they intend to work. We strongly encourage applicants to connect with these researchers prior to application to explore potential collaborative areas.
As part of our commitment to fostering a positive Earth and Planetary Science community, we are especially interested in candidates who are dedicated to improving their professional environment beyond their research. This could be through interest and/or past experience with any number of aspects of contributive service, such as organizing a successful conference workshop, running a reading seminar for graduate students, organizing a departmental colloquium, or participating in graduate student governance.
The appointment is for two years, contingent upon available funding and performance. Salary is $70,000 per year, plus benefits and includes discretionary funds of $5,000 per year, as well as one-time relocation expenses of up to $3,000. The position is open to recent PhD recipients (degree conferral within the past 3 years) in the Earth, Atmospheric, Oceanic, Cryospheric, Planetary Sciences or related fields. Review of applications will begin January 12, 2024. The start date is flexible, but is expected to be between May 1, 2024 and September 1, 2024.
To be considered, applications must include the following four elements:
Cover Letter (1–2 pages): Should describe the applicant’s research interests and past work, their interest and/or experience in improving their professional working environment, any pertinent examples to demonstrate their persistence in the face of professional challenges, and any other relevant information they wish the search committee to know.
Curriculum Vitae (CV): Should include the applicant’s employment history, publications, conference abstracts/presentations, and any records of awards or extramural funding.
Research Plan (one page, excluding references and up to two figures): Should describe the work the applicant proposes to conduct during their fellowship, as well as their proposed research mentor(s). The research plan should also include a description of how the proposed research will integrate with and add to existing research conducted within the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Given the two year duration of the position, it is expected that the proposed work will be primarily completed within this timeframe.
List of Professional References: List of names and contact information for three professional references.
