About the role

Research Computing (https://rc.duke.edu) works with Duke researchers across campus to advance computational and data intensive research.  Duke researchers are experts in their fields, and may, or may not be computing experts as well.  We want to meet researchers “where they are” to advance their research goals with a positive and helpful attitude.

 

We are looking for a program manager to provide overall direction and coordination of an exciting new program to improve research IT support across campus. Reporting to the Director of Research Computing and Support (OIT) and in partnership with leadership from the Office for Research & Innovation (OR&I), the Duke University Libraries, and the Duke University IT Security Office (ITSO), the role will lead implementation of key improvement initiatives and includes coordination of communication, personnel, budget, metrics, reporting, and milestone management in support of this large collaborative research initiative.

 

A key objective of this role will be to evangelize and operationalize these initiatives through the formation and management of appropriate campus-wide virtual teams.

 

Specific duties include:

  • With support from the Director of Research Computing and Support, develop and provide direction for the identified initiatives in support of the overall program. The role will be responsible for program updates and coordination across all program leads, sponsor, stakeholder, and administrative groups.
  • Partner with communications professionals to develop a communications program and ensure visibility of the program and subsequent services in appropriate channels, internal and external.
  • Establish cross-functional teams within/across OIT, OR&I, ITSO, and the Libraries.  Create processes to communicate and train individuals as well as scope and manage deliverables.
  • Oversee the development and reporting of program metrics.

  • Ability to work with minimal oversight while investigating a problem and scoping out possible solutions as well as knowing when it’s time to bring problems back to the team for help or a second opinion.
  • Ability to clearly communicate issues from researchers to program personnel.
  • Ability to work with a wider variety of stakeholders and respectfully share knowledge and skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability for changing priorities and requirements.
  • Familiarity with campus IT services for research computing, research, and/or Duke is highly desired, but not required.

 

Education/Training

Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred with 9 years combined education / experience in a related field required. Project management experience is highly desired.

 

Working Conditions:

Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours for planned activities, and rarely, may be contacted during off hours.

Currently the position may work remotely or at our Durham, NC location. In the future, the role may transition to a hybrid requirement with some days required on site.
