About the role
The PRN Respiratory Therapist provides as-needed respiratory care services to patients in a hospital setting. This role performs respiratory assessments, administers prescribed respiratory therapies, manages oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation, and performs diagnostic testing in accordance with physician orders, established clinical protocols, and professional standards. The PRN Respiratory Therapist supports patient care needs based on variable scheduling, patient volume, and operational demand while upholding the mission, vision, and values of MSRH. Work is performed under the supervision of Respiratory Therapy leadership and in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team. The PRN role requires flexibility to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, on-call coverage, and call-back as needed.
- Assess patients and provide respiratory therapy services in accordance with physician orders and established protocols.
- Administer respiratory treatments including aerosol therapy, bronchial hygiene therapy, oxygen therapy, and other prescribed modalities.
- Perform arterial blood gas collection and analysis.
- Manage mechanical ventilation, including ventilator setup, monitoring, troubleshooting, weaning, and discontinuation as appropriate.
- Perform pulmonary diagnostic testing and monitor patient response to therapy.
- Respond to Code Blue, Rapid Response, and other emergency situations requiring respiratory support.
- Educate patients and families regarding respiratory treatments and equipment as appropriate.
- Document patient assessments, treatments, and responses accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Maintain respiratory equipment and ensure readiness for patient care.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned based on operational needs.
- Working knowledge of respiratory therapy principles, oxygen delivery systems, ventilator management, and cardiopulmonary physiology.
- Ability to assess patients and recommend appropriate respiratory care interventions.
- Ability to administer respiratory treatments and perform diagnostic testing in accordance with physician orders and clinical protocols.
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in emergent and rapidly changing clinical situations.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, patients, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ability to adapt to variable schedules, fluctuating patient acuity, and operational demands typical of PRN assignments.
- Ability to accurately document patient care and comply with regulatory, safety, and infection control standards.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting the mission, vision, and values of MSRH through safe, patient-centered care.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy required
Certification/Licensure:
RCP required
RRT required
