Job Summary

The Anesthesia Technician assists nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists in the main OR, OB, and other locations throughout the hospital where anesthesia services are provided. They are responsible for performing these duties under the supervision of the nurse anesthetist and anesthesiologist.

Required Certifications/Licensure: CPR Certification (or completion of course within one year)
Required Training: Basic computer skills

Essential Functions

  • Checks all OR rooms daily prior to OR starts for cleanliness and availability of essential equipment.
  • Cleans and checks anesthesia carts and machines daily, according to approved aseptic technique and equipment specifications.          
    • Cleans and disinfects carts and anesthesia machines surfaces with approved   disinfectants – should include dusting and cleaning drawer interiors and under monitors   on top of the machines.           
    • Cleans and examines equipment cables.
  • Check Labor and Delivery rooms daily.
  • Transports dirty equipment to appropriate department for cleaning.
  • Responsible for maintaining the Anesthesia Work Room.       
    • Maintains the workroom and supply area in a clean and organized manner.   
    • Proactively in keeping equipment and supplies in the proper location.    
    • Maintains an adequate level of necessary supplies; notifies Director or Manager when  items are  low.            
    • Checks expiration dates monthly on blood tubes and equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures special equipment is clean and readily available for the department.    
    • Cleans and maintains difficult airway carts in OR, including glidescopes and fiber optics.              
    • Demonstrates proficiency for assembly and cleaning of fiberoptic laryngoscope.   
    • Troubleshoots equipment daily and notifies Bio-Medical personnel of equipment problems immediately, i.e., bronchoscopes, transport monitor, pulse oximeters.    
    • Cleans, disinfects and maintains laryngoscopes between cases.     
    • Notifies director or manager when equipment is out of service.
  • Is readily accessible to CRNAs and Anesthesiologists for emergency calls. Notifies scheduler when leaving the OR to service other areas.
  • Coordinates vacation and scheduled absences with the Manager and Director (Scheduled time off will need to be coordinated with the Periop Assistants by management). Notify Manager or Director of unscheduled absences.
  • Responsible for documenting departmental activities as assigned; Writing should be legible.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate in a team environment assuring accurate information as required.
  • Performs duties of a Perioperative Assistant as needed. (See Perioperative Assistant Job Description).
  • Ensure Hazardous Waste or Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals are discarded, stored, and managed with other compatible waste streams in containers that are properly labeled and closed prior to being shipped offsite for proper disposal.  Initial RCRA training is received within 6 months of the hire date and continuing with annual RCRA training.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
