As a Weld Engineer within Manufacturing Operations at Medtronic, you will play a critical role in ensuring the quality, efficiency, and reliability of laser and resistance welding processes utilized in the production of batteries used in life-saving cardiac devices. You will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining welding techniques, equipment, and procedures to meet stringent regulatory and quality standards. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including Quality, Process Development, and Device Design & Reliability you will contribute to process improvements, troubleshooting, and the integration of new welding technologies to enhance manufacturing performance.

Key responsibilities include performing root cause analyses for welding-related issues, qualifying new welding processes, and ensuring compliance with Medtronic’s quality systems and industry regulations. This role requires a strong understanding of materials science, welding metallurgy, and automated welding systems, along with a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in manufacturing operations.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining and material handling. 

  • Designs arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure most efficient and productive layout. 

  • Designs sequence of operations and specifies procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment and other functions that affect product performance. 

  • Adapts machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions. 

  • May incorporate inspection and test requirements into the production plan. 

  • Inspects performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency, and investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality. 

  • Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control, and may develop those techniques. 

  • Provides guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques. 

  • Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations. 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, OR an Advanced degree with 0 years of experience 

 

Nice to Have

  • Excellent documentation skills in a regulated environment  

  • Experience planning, authoring, testing, and documenting sequence code for PC-based manufacturing equipment  

  • Working knowledge of state machines  

  • Ability to create and interpret flow charts, state diagrams, and sequence diagrams  

  • Ability to author and interpret software requirements and test cases  

  • Proficiency in text-based coding; experience with AeroBasic and/or AeroScript code  

  • Proficiency in using Cognex VisionPro  

  • Experience with RSW and/or laser welding processes
