Position Summary and Qualifications:

The Art and Art History Department seeks an adjunct instructor to teach a beginning level ceramics course for the fall 2026 semester. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and demonstrates the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner.


Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) offers a wide variety of bachelor's, master's, doctoral, associate and certifi cate programs. With a commitment to personalized attention through a low faculty to student ratio, SJU may call on the expertise of adjunct instructors to complement the work of full-time faculty across all of its colleges and schools.

SJU appoints part-time, non-tenure track adjunct instructors on a semester-to-semester basis with no guarantee of consecutive appointments. Re-appointment is based on university need, student enrollment, and satisfactory performance. Applicants for these positions are screened on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year. Teaching responsibilities are assigned by the department chair. Compensation for adjunct instructors is commensurate with educational credentials, professional, experience and instructional background. Adjunct instructors are bound to the terms and conditions of employment at Saint Joseph’s University, including but not limited to the Faculty Handbook. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide in-person instruction on ceramic handbuilding techniques, glazing and surfacing of assigned pieces, concept development, and ceramic terminology for assigned courses. This includes preparation for in-class activities, evaluation of students’ work, and regular consultation with students both in and outside of class and/or on-line

  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus and class outline at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook

  • Regularly upload and monitor class documents, assignments, and communications through Canvas

  • Respond in a timely manner to students’ emails

  • Maintain accurate class records and class assessments required by the college

  • Submit, when due, mid-term and final grade reports

  • Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices

  • Maintain office hours each week, at 1 hour per week per section

  • Maintain a safe and orderly classroom

  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the University and College of Arts & Sciences

  • Work cooperatively within the college community

  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias

  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Master’s degree in studio art

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting belonging, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and must be willing to contribute to the College's strategic plan of inclusion

  • Faculty members are expected to have access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus)*. Saint Joseph’s University provides an SJU e-mail account and access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, college listservs, and other faculty communications tools

Preferred:

  • Previous teaching experience (instructor of record) at the post-secondary level

  • Experience with a vast array of Ceramics practices

  • Knowledge of non-western practices
