MSTS is looking for a dynamic Senior Scientist to support the Aerial Measuring System (AMS) program. AMS is a program within the Department of Energy's Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) that supports state, local, tribal, territorial, and national governments during a radiological emergency. AMS provides specialized airborne radiation detection systems to provide real-time highly sensitive measurements of radiation. The AMS team consists of scientists, technicians, pilots, and ground support personnel. These trained experts oversee maintaining a state of readiness to respond to a radiological emergency at any time. They are also responsible for conducting training and participating in exercise activities. This position is located at the Remote Sensing Laboratory-Andrews (RSL-A), on Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. To learn more, please check out these videos:

Key Responsibilities
- Collect, analyze and interpret radiological data from airborne and ground-based platforms, during exercises, trainings and real-world incidents.
- Maintain the ability to present analytical results to a technical or non-technical audience.
Attain and maintain programmatic training, qualifications, and medical fitness requirements to serve as an active emergency responder.
- Utilize specialized tools and applications to calculate potential impact on the public, workers, and the environment to support radiological emergencies
Serve on at least one of the National-level Nuclear Incident response teams for the NEST assets.
- Ability to deploy worldwide for exercises and responses, with as little as two hours’ notice when on call.
- Maintain training and ensure job-specific qualifications remain current; as well as attend onsite and off-site training as necessary to maintain competency.
- Assist in developing training materials and deliver training to emergency responders across the DOE community and other partners.
Operate radiation detection equipment in field operations.
- Support real world missions with the possibility of collecting data while on a helicopter or fixed wing aircraft.
- Contribute to the development and testing of software applications specific to radiological emergency response activities.
- Provide scientific guidance on projects involving an interdisciplinary team of engineers, software developers, scientists, and technicians.
- Maintain subject matter expertise and proficiency on detection equipment to instruct during courses or offer troubleshooting during operations or events.
