The Operations & Facilities Management Department at Washington University School of Medicine is committed to delivering a comprehensive range of services to support the medical campus.We oversee maintenance and operations for 65 buildings, covering more than 11.1 million gross square feet of space. This includes the 11-story, 609,000-square-foot neuroscience research building, which houses one of the world’s highest concentrations of neuroscientists. Our responsibilities include operational and administrative support, strategic planning, and project management.
Furthermore, as the School of Medicine continues to expand its presence both on and off campus in areas such as teaching, clinical care, and research, our team remains instrumental in ensuring the seamless delivery of clinical care, advancing research initiatives, and facilitating educational endeavors.
The position is responsible for the application of various paints and stains, as well as the repairing of structures of all types, including but not limited to plaster, drywall, masonry, wood, and metal.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Works with University Faculty and Staff to recommend paints, finishes, colors, and textures based on customer needs.
- Provides accurate estimates based on labor and materials.
- Applies latex, alcohol, oil, and epoxy-based paints and stains using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment.
- Responds to off-hour/weekend/holiday emergency pages/phone call-ins for assigned areas.
- Communicates project timeline to customers, ensuring minimal work interruptions to daily operations.
- Utilizes work order software, email, and other Office programs to manage workload and communicate with customers.
- Follows through on completed work to verify that proper facility conditions are restored and customer needs have been met.
- Keeps Facilities Engineering Supervisors aware of facility conditions, problems, and needs.
- Maintains effective communication with other Facility Maintenance Technicians and Maintenance Support Staff.
- Painting Skills: Ladder and scaffolding work; brush, roller, and spray applications; stenciling; special paint applications: multispec, zolotone, total flex; staining and finishing: new work and matching existing.
- Repairs: Damages to drywall and plaster walls and ceilings; ceramic tile; caulking and glazing; vinyl wall coverings; painted and epoxied floor surfaces; masonry walls.
- Documentation: Completion of work orders; identification of time and material spent on the project; provision of time and material cost estimate for projects.
- Performs tasks outside the job description supporting the Department and the School’s mission.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Works inside and outside, in dusty and dirty places such as pits and equipment spaces where temperatures may exceed 100 degrees and equipment may be oily and greasy.
- Exposed to wet and cold conditions, as well as noise and vibration from operation equipment.
- Must be able to work in morgues, gross anatomy, and pathology laboratories.
- Employee may be required to work in the vicinity of labs containing biohazardous radioactive substances.
Physical Effort
- Ability to lift and carry tools and material weighing more than 50 pounds and raise and carry with assistance items weighing 200 pounds.
- Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch to access areas needing repair.
- Ability to handle a variety of hand and power tools.
- Near-visual acuity (correctable with glasses) needed to read equipment diagrams and inspect equipment.
- Good depth perception, field of vision, and color vision needed to match and install finishes required.
