The opportunity 

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities.  These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services;  designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As an Associate Mechanical Engineer within our  Mechanical Engineering Department, you will play a vital role in advancing our critical research and development projects. Your responsibilities will include contributing to the design, prototyping, testing, and validation of products, with a focus on quantifying physical comfort variables, establishing baseline comfort for wearable devices, and integrating new technology to support comfort goals. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including Human Factors, Simulation, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, and Manufacturing, to ensure that our products meet their design and performance goals. This role requires a hands-on approach, familiarity with the Product Life Cycle process, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Your work will be crucial in mitigating technical risks, managing resources, and ensuring the timely delivery of key project milestones, thereby supporting our commitment to innovation and excellence.

This role is based at our HQ in Plantation, FL and will require onsite presence the majority of the time. Relocation assistance is available for non-local candidates.

What you’ll do 

  • Collaborate with stakeholders from diverse disciplines, including human factors, industrial design, electrical, software, controls, and optics, to gather and develop design requirements and specifications for product components and assemblies. Facilitate the prototyping process for mechanical and opto-mechanical components and assemblies, ensuring they meet production standards.
  • Develop innovative concepts and designs for fixtures, and production components using 3D CAD software (e.g., Creo).
  • Assist in research and development to determine suitable product technologies within cost constraints.
  • Design solutions to address technical challenges, ensuring the development of high-quality and innovative products.
  • Participate in engineering design reviews, contributing to the development and improvement of product designs.
  • Work closely with Manufacturing, suppliers, and outsource partners to support the design and development of products and components that meet mass production requirements.
  • Support the design, fabrication, and installation of fixtures and equipment, ensuring adherence to engineering and customer specifications.
  • Engage in prototype builds, troubleshooting manufacturing and reliability issues from cradle to grave.

The experience you bring

  • 3 years of professional experience in mechanical engineering design of consumer products.
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience designing electronic packaging.
  • Experience working with suppliers developing various part designs (Plastic, Rubber, Sheet Metal, Thermoform, Die Cut, etc.) and an understanding of their manufacturing processes.
