LOCATION: Houston, TX headquarters with assignment to project sites nationwide (travel and relocation required)
REPORTS TO: Project Manager, or equivalent project-level leadership

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Field Engineer is an entry-level, development-focused role built for early-career talent, including recent graduates, who want to grow into project management within federal construction. No direct experience is required. Working under the direction of the Project Manager, Site Superintendent, and Assistant Project Manager, the Field Engineer provides technical, administrative, and field coordination support across the project lifecycle while building the knowledge and skills to advance into an Assistant Project Manager role.
The Field Engineer is the link between the field and the project management team. The role helps make sure work is performed safely, on schedule, and in line with contract requirements, quality standards, and federal compliance requirements.
Career path: This is a structured step role. With demonstrated performance and readiness, the expected progression is Field Engineer to Assistant Project Manager to Project Manager, based on demonstrated performance and business need. QGS invests in mentorship, on-the-job training, and cross-functional exposure to move you along that path.
What You'll Do
- Support the Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, and Superintendent with day-to-day field operations.
- Assist with daily project documentation including reports, photographs, meeting minutes, RFIs, submittals, and correspondence.
- Perform field verification of completed work to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and quality requirements.
- Assist with site layout, survey, and control, verifying that work is placed in conformance with drawings, including checking forms and control points before concrete placement.
- Assist with quantity tracking, production reporting, and installed work verification.
- Track quantities and costs against budget and support production trend analysis for cost and schedule reports.
- Support preparation of as-built documentation.
- Coordinate material deliveries and verify quantities and equipment received.
- Track subcontractor and trade partner activities and assist with field coordination.
- Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and site inspections.
- Assist in maintaining site-specific documentation including Accident Prevention Plans (APPs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Environmental Plans, and Quality Control Plans.
- Support preparation of three-week look-ahead schedules and daily work plans.
- Assist with field measurements for change orders and progress billing.
- Help maintain project files and make sure documentation is properly uploaded into the QGS project management platform within the GCC High environment.
- Identify field issues and communicate them promptly to project leadership.
- Participate in project meetings and document action items.
- Support project closeout including punch list tracking, turnover documentation, and warranty items.
- Continuously develop technical, construction management, and federal contracting knowledge in preparation for advancement into an Assistant Project Manager role.
