GENERAL FUNCTION:

Evaluate, design, and implement technology solutions to build and progress technology strategies within our organization. The incumbent will be the application owner responsible for the Snowflake platform, ensuring it aligns with our business needs and technology roadmap. This role includes working closely with vendors to understand upcoming changes and ensuring the platform's integration and configuration meet our evolving requirements. The Principal Platform Engineer will collaborate with product owners and stakeholders to develop effective technology solutions, particularly in an agile environment.

Operating within the organization's risk appetite, the Principal Platform Engineer will achieve results while consistently identifying, assessing, managing, monitoring, and reporting risks of all types.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build, maintain, and administer our Snowflake data warehouse using Data Build Tool (dbt).
  • Implement and maintain data pipelines between various operational systems and our data warehouse using Python, Airflow, and integration platforms.
  • Create and maintain documentation of data architecture.
  • Optimize Snowflake performance and manage data storage efficiently.
  • Develop and maintain monitoring and alerting systems for critical actions and events within Snowflake.
  • Implement cost-saving strategies and optimize data usage patterns.
  • Stay updated with advancements in Snowflake and AWS technologies and guide platform evolution.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to enforce security best practices, including access control and credential management.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure data requirements are addressed.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and training for new or less experienced team members

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technology field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 8+ years of engineering or other IT work experience relevant to the position.
  • Extensive experience with Snowflake, dbt, and Unix.
  • Expertise in building end-to-end data pipelines using Airflow and dbt or comparable technologies.
  • Experience with AWS and CloudFormation, or comparable cloud services and IaC tools preferred.
  • Experience with Docker and Docker Compose preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Willingness to work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Solid understanding and significant experience with modern software development practices, tools, and/or hardware technologies.
  • Solid understanding of IT security best practices.
