Data Scientist

The Role

Moderna’s Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) team is seeking a motivated data scientist with experience in applying machine learning, particularly natural language processing, optimization, and/or advanced prediction methods to address problems in a clinical or pharmaceutical setting. We envision this role playing a key role in addressing optimization and probabilistic modeling problems in clinical development.

The individual in this role will work together with stakeholders to construct bespoke solutions to high-value clinical operations problems using methods such as natural language processing, Bayesian networks, Monte Carlo simulation, and optimization. The successful candidate is someone who loves to learn, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and cares deeply about delivering on the promise of mRNA medicines for patients.

Here’s What You’ll Do

• Support clinical operations stakeholders by providing results via exploratory data analysis, data visualization, statistics, and machine learning.

• Implement advanced optimization methods, natural language processing, and statistical models in the service of designing more efficient, equitable, and patient-centered clinical trials.

• Keep up to date with the latest state-of-the-art prediction and optimization methods and identify opportunities to use them.

• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders from clinical operations and other business units.

• Collaborate extensively with other data scientists, software engineers, product managers, digital strategy partners, and various other business teams.

• Effectively communicate complex methods and results to internal and external audiences.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or related data-intensive discipline

• 4-6+ minimum experience

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

• Fluency in Python, especially the data scientific stack (Jupyter/Pandas/scikit-learn).

• Experience with Python probabilistic modeling packages (PyMC/PyStan/Pyro) and/or natural language processing tools (Hugging Face/spaCy/NLTK/OpenAI).

• Familiarity with best practices in software development, including Amazon Web Services, Docker, version control (Git), and documentation.

• Experience with Python deep learning frameworks, especially Pytorch.

• Experience working with patient data or other sensitive clinical data, both structured (e.g. tables) and unstructured (e.g. free text, images).

• Working knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL).

• Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
