Sr Counsel, Intellectual Property - Nutrition

JOB DESCRIPTION:

RESPONSIBILITIES     

The Senior Counsel will support the Abbott Nutrition Division of Abbott Laboratories. The successful candidate will have opportunities to:

• Develop a deep understanding of Abbott’s technologies and customers
• Provide ongoing patent-related training to the business
• Provide legal and strategic guidance to clients, including senior management
• Work closely with cross-functional teams to identify and mine strategic inventions
• Manage invention disclosures, including collecting and screening disclosures, conducting inventor interviews, and providing recommendations on filing strategies
• Manage an active docket, including overseeing the filing and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications and the strategic development of the portfolio
• Manage outside counsel, including reviewing work product to ensure it meets Abbott’s expectations
• Conduct due diligence assessments on potential mergers and acquisitions
• Complete freedom-to-operate assessments
• Assist internal and external litigation counsel on IP litigation matters
• Develop and implement patent strategies for key projects
• Participate in the effective management of the budget

REQUIREMENTS        

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admitted to a U.S. state bar in good standing
• USPTO registration in good standing
• Strong academic background
• Minimum of 7 years working as a patent attorney and counseling clients on intellectual property issues, including freedom-to-operate and patent prosecution
• Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and strategic thinking
• Ability to manage numerous projects and deadlines simultaneously
• High standards for quality and excellence

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience handling PTAB proceedings/EPO Oppositions and supporting patent litigation
• Significant freedom-to-operate or product clearance experience
• In-house experience
• Working knowledge of patent laws in major jurisdictions outside of the U.S.
• USPTO experience

     

The base pay for this position is

$147,300.00 – $294,700.00

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
