JOB DESCRIPTION:
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Counsel will support the Abbott Nutrition Division of Abbott Laboratories. The successful candidate will have opportunities to:
- Develop a deep understanding of Abbott’s technologies and customers
- Provide ongoing patent-related training to the business
- Provide legal and strategic guidance to clients, including senior management
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to identify and mine strategic inventions
- Manage invention disclosures, including collecting and screening disclosures, conducting inventor interviews, and providing recommendations on filing strategies
- Manage an active docket, including overseeing the filing and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications and the strategic development of the portfolio
- Manage outside counsel, including reviewing work product to ensure it meets Abbott’s expectations
- Conduct due diligence assessments on potential mergers and acquisitions
- Complete freedom-to-operate assessments
- Assist internal and external litigation counsel on IP litigation matters
- Develop and implement patent strategies for key projects
- Participate in the effective management of the budget
REQUIREMENTS
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admitted to a U.S. state bar in good standing
- USPTO registration in good standing
- Strong academic background
- Minimum of 7 years working as a patent attorney and counseling clients on intellectual property issues, including freedom-to-operate and patent prosecution
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and strategic thinking
- Ability to manage numerous projects and deadlines simultaneously
- High standards for quality and excellence
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience handling PTAB proceedings/EPO Oppositions and supporting patent litigation
- Significant freedom-to-operate or product clearance experience
- In-house experience
- Working knowledge of patent laws in major jurisdictions outside of the U.S.
- USPTO experience
The base pay for this position is
$147,300.00 – $294,700.00In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
