Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery seeking CO Sr. Clinical Nurse to provide comprehensive patient care coordination and responsible for the daily oversight for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Cleft & Craniofacial Center and pediatric dental services by collaborating with patient and their families, the cleft & craniofacial team, and other specialists to address the complex medical needs of our patients. Patients with craniofacial or dentofacial differences have complex needs that require multidisciplinary care. This care often requires the patient to have coordination between multiple specialties as well as a various number of diagnostic studies and tests.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Clinic Management Prior to Preoperative Visits
- Cultivate a standard intake process for referred patients and distribution of those patient to the appropriate surgeon.
- Engage families to ensure that the correct diagnostic imaging and referrals are in place so that their visit is efficient with the surgeon and team.
- Initiate and coordinate oral health needs with pediatric dental providers and subspecialties.
Clinic Visit
- Organize any diagnostic studies (ophthalmology, sleep study, CT scans, intra oral scans)
- Draft a comprehensive letter to ensure that the patient understands their plan as well as communication with other physicians.
- Manage patient education session and materials.
- Perform any photographs, 2D and 3D for documentation.
- Review lab data and triage to medical staff.
Post Clinic
- Organize all photos and documents to create a patient portal so that we are able to use these for insurance approval or patient care conferences.
- Organize any preoperative testing, blood draws, or consultations needs to ensure safety in the OR.
- Proactively monitor and help facilitate anticipated surgical care coordination needs and preoperative workups.
- Effectively communicate with physicians, advanced practice and nurses about urgent/emergent patient concerns or care needs.
- Interact with patients regularly, through telephonic and face-to-face contact, and successfully provide patient care in support of our medical providers, including preoperative and postoperative patient education.
Operative Room/Post Op
- Engage in the operating room with the rest of the staff to ensure that equipment and medical supplies are prepared.
- Help with post operative management with the surgeon and team.
Post Op Clinic
- Manage a schedule of post operative clinic patients to ensure healing and correction of issues that may arise.
- Allow for detailed communication with referring providers that surgery was successful or complicated.
Other
- Assist within basket triage messaging.
- Provide feeding strategies and support.
- Practice nursing per clinical policy and protocols for the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery department and under the nursing scope of practice for the State of Maryland. Report to Division Director any issues related to development and implementation of medical protocols.
- Create and develop institutional protocols for coordination between pediatric subspecialties and pediatric dental providers (cardiac, cardiac surgery, Bone Marrow, Oncology, KKI, Transplant etc.)
- Provide oversight and quality control of all aspects of the operation.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Requires interaction with a diverse population.
- Demonstrates effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and word processing applications preferred.
- Ability to work independently within guidelines, be organized, and establish priorities.
- Displays high standards of attendance and punctuality, maintains confidentiality, ability to adapt and be flexible, and manages time effectively.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
- Registered nurse licensed in State of Maryland.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related discipline.
- Registered Nurse licensed in State of Maryland.
- Two years related nursing experience.
- Additional experience may substitute for bachelor's degree. Related master's degree may be considered in lieu of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- Experience with pediatric craniofacial patients and hospital care coordination.
