Statement of Purpose:

Responsible for the supervision of clinical staff including Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (LPNs, LVNs), Medical Assistants (MAs), and Phlebotomists. Provides and coordinates direct nursing care to patients and assesses their wellbeing. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient quality of life through competent nursing care and leadership. 


Career Path:

Nurse Managers manage a varying degree of skill and work depending on their certifications, community engagement participation, and participation in CAN sanctioned specialty roles or committees. There are three Nurse Manager (LPN/RN) levels: Nurse Manager 1, Nurse Manager 2, and Nurse Manager 3. A level and salary are assigned based on their participation, skill level, experience, and education. A Nurse Manager (LPN/RN) can directly affect their career path (level) based on their work to increase the size and scope of their participation in activities and skill development. Levels are reviewed at minimum annually as part of the annual review/merit cycle.


Essential Functions:

  • Promotes and practices CAN Community Health Inc’s mission, vision, guiding principles, and values and follows its policies and procedures.
  • Manages clinical staff including, but not limited to RNs, LPNs/LVNs, Phlebotomists, and MAs.  
  • Participates in the hiring, ongoing supervision, performance evaluations of assigned staff. Ensures all new staff are oriented and trained.
  • Conducts daily huddles, and staff meetings in collaboration with Practice Administrator.
  • Conducts 1:1 discussions with clinical staff routinely and as needed. 
  • Timely addresses and documents any clinical staff situations that require disciplinary actions per company policy. 
  • Coordinates with staff on daily activities to ensure all tasks and roles are covered by preparing nursing assignments to meet changing workload needs. 
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with other departments/services (Patient Care Coordinators, Prevention Team, Peer Navigators, Case Managers, and others) to coordinate patient care.
  • Delegates activities to support staff within their scope of practice and ensures these are completed effectively.
  • Handles day-to-day clinical/nursing care services provided to patients/clients. 
  • Collaborates with Clinical Services leadership as well as with other Departments to ensure clinical and departmental policies and procedures are being followed.
  • Coaches and educates nursing staff on clinical protocols and procedures and continuously monitors their clinical competency/skills. Coordinates training/education needs accordingly. Evaluates the efficacy of education and counseling approaches and strategies. 
  • Oversees and monitors quality assurance and safety activities (chart audits, inspection of clinical spaces, infection control measures) as established per CAN policies to ensure compliance with local, federal, operational, and OSHA/Stericycle standards. Documents all quality activities and ensures corrective actions are implemented for continuous quality improvement.
  • Coordinates with the EMR team to continuously improve documentation efficiency for clinical staff and ensures that clinical staff is compliant with the established EMR guidelines.
