Job Summary

This position oversees the lending of materials from Regenstein Circulation, including course reserves and materials awaiting pickup. This position also shares responsibility for the hiring, training, and managing of student circulation staff. This person is also responsible for answering patron questions relating to Access Services and serving as a resource for questions relating to other Library services. During their shift, this person oversees clerical staff, acts as the supervisor in charge of the Regenstein Library, oversees building security, and enforces policies for maintaining a scholarly environment in Regenstein.

Responsibilities

  • Hires, trains, supervises, and schedules student counter attendants (approximately 20 part-time student employees). Monitors and approves hours and payroll for student counter attendants. Coaches and directs student counter attendants in maintaining Circulation policies and customer service standards. Monitors and documents attendance and performance and reports progress and problems with student staff to the Head of Circulation.

  • During their shift, supervises clerical staff, acts as the supervisor in charge of the Regenstein Library, oversees building security, resolves problems and appeals from users on Entry policies. Responsible for executing opening or closing procedures of Regenstein Library. Promptly reports building issues to Library and University Facilities Services and provides initial response to emergencies. Provides support for public events held in Regenstein Library.

  • Responsible for providing excellent and empathetic customer service, answering patron questions related to Access Services. Routes questions to the appropriate resource as needed, if beyond the supervisor's area of expertise/responsibility/knowledge. May serve on working groups or committees with supervisor approval.

  • Manages daily circulation workflow including lending of materials awaiting pickup, course reserves, and general collections. Documents and updates departmental procedures accordingly.

  • Answers inquiries concerning overdue books, recalls, reserve problems, and fines in person, over the phone, and via online ticketing system. Responsible for collection of fines and fees. Attempts to resolve problems as appropriate and refer or report problems to the Head of Regenstein Circulation.

  • Enforces policies for maintaining a scholarly environment. Attempts to resolve problems with empathy and tact, and/or refers patrons’ concerns to the Head of Regenstein Circulation or to other campus entities (Dean on Call, UCPD, etc.) when appropriate. Documents and reports incidents.

  • Provides supervisory coverage for Mansueto Circulation on an as needed basis due to staffing absences/vacancies.

  • Responsible for answering patron questions related to Access Services and serves as a resources for other questions related to other Library services.

  • Distributes work to and monitors the work done by student counter attendants; troubleshoots equipment as needed.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
