JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Camps & Facilities, the Director of Camp Programs is responsible for the mission, goals, values, leader behaviors and brand promise of the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida at our camps. This position oversees the development, administration and operations of year-round camp programs including summer camp. The Director of Camp Programs is responsible for spearheading safety and risk management procedures for all programs at camp; overseeing two full-time outdoor program managers; hiring, training and directing the management of approximately 50 seasonal summer camp staff at two camps; developing and maintaining an outdoor progression training programs for volunteers; and building a network of program trainers, facilitators and external partners for certified program areas to include: lifeguards, target sports (archery/ax-throwing), marine lab, small watercraft, equestrian and challenge courses.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Camp Program Development, Administration, Implementation & Evaluation
- Plan, develop, oversee implementation, and evaluate Girl Scout programming at four camps, delivering on a high quality Girl Scout leadership experience and maximizing camp utilization for summer, weekend and year-round programs. This will require an intensive summer schedule and working various weekends when we have large-scale programs at camps.
- Prepare annual camp program budgets to meet enrollment and financial goals. Administer the budget and exercise necessary controls to ensure that the operation is maintained within the approved budget. In response to financial trends, recommend adjustments in operations to ensure a balanced operation.
- Oversee launch/management of camp registration and program area reservation processes using technology systems (i.e., Camp Brain, ActiveNet) to maximize camp utilization year-round and summer camp enrollment.
- Facilitate processes for certifications/accreditations and all related reporting, especially to ensure compliance for American Camp Association Accreditation.
- Collaborate with marketing and communications team to promote camp programs.
- Work to ensure a risk-free environment and report incidents, accidents and injuries following proper company protocols and working closely with the executive team on internal/external communications.
- Track progress in data reports and program evaluation outcomes; monitor and assess all data to ensure programs are meeting established goals; use data to make program and process improvements.
- Provide programmatic insights that guide facilities management. Continuously assess the camp environment to ensure the grounds and facilities are safe, aesthetically acceptable and meet or exceed standards. Immediately document and alert the VP with concerns to resolve issues that arise.
People Leadership, Training, Development & Supervision
- Supervise two outdoor program managers.
- Oversee the supervision of all seasonal staff related to summer camp and residential summer camp.
- Lead the hiring of summer camp staff using the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida recruitment, hiring and onboarding tools, and staying in compliance with American Camp Association accreditation standards.
- Oversee the recruitment, training and support for a network of trained/certified camp program facilitators who are paid lifeguards, target sport (archery/ax-throwing) facilitators, equestrian facilitators and challenge course facilitators. Formalize training and certification plans, oversee performance review and scheduling and provide employee recognition.
- Ensure the development of staff and volunteers by formalizing training and development plans and providing recognition that will bolster morale and create team processes.
- Use your experience and emotional intelligence to navigate challenges, de-escalate crises and mediate relations to ensure positive staff development and mission delivery by staff, partners or volunteers.
- Observe staff, facilitator and camper behavior. Assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, apply/teach appropriate behavior-management techniques, and manage crises/conflicts with effective communication techniques.
