Job Description:

The Senior Financial Aid Coordinator position within Louisiana State University’s Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships will play a key collaborative role in advancing the university and meeting the student access objectives.  The individual, with general oversight from the Manager, will support the counseling staff in the execution of their day-to-day duties, provide clear and accurate communication with prospective and current students and families, and will assist the manager with the growth of the university’s financial aid outreach programs.

Financial Aid Counseling (35%)

  • Provide comprehensive counseling and student-focused advising to prospective and enrolled students regarding federal and state financial aid programs, including Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), TEACH Grants, Federal Work-Study, and Direct Loan Programs. Assistance is delivered through phone, in-person, and written communication.

  • Accurately interpret and communicate financial aid policies, eligibility requirements, and procedures to ensure students and families fully understand their options and responsibilities.

  • Deliver timely, responsive, student-centered service by addressing concerns efficiently and professionally.

  • Conducts individualized outreach to prospective and continuing students through phone calls, email correspondence, and other communication methods as appropriate.

  • Responsible for assisting students in resolving problems associated with the application processes for federal and state programs, the electronic loan transmission process and the correction process. 

Financial Aid Operations (35%)

  • Resolves over award situations, which involves reducing one or more aid programs because of receipt of additional resources or conflicting financial information.  Must inform students, contact appropriate agencies, and return proceeds.

  • Serves as a secondary private student loan certification official, as needed.

  • Serves as a rotating member of the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) appeals committee.

  • Aid in the retention of students through direct outreach to at risk populations, providing students with a thorough understanding of resources and policies. 

 

Financial Aid Administration (20%)

  • Assists with the training, development, and mentorship of financial aid counseling staff.

  • Evaluates and processes requests for “special circumstances” and “petitions for independent status” presented by students in determining eligibility for the federal programs. 

  • Responsible for the processing of external information requests for the office including needs analysis, AmeriCorps, study abroad, tribal, and all other certifications.

  • Serves as a secondary processer for origination and disbursement rejects for the William D. Ford Direct loan program.

  • Serves as primary point of contact for the scheduling of all high school/FAFSA completion outreach requests.

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for the scheduling of all Bengal Bound events for the financial aid staff. This includes helping staff with any travel items as well.

Special projects as assigned (10%)

  • Represent LSU and the Office of Enrollment Management at professional functions and recruiting events, both on and off campus. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • One year of experience working in financial aid capacity. 

  • Meets eligibility to obtain National Student Loan Database System access and must not be in default on student loans.
