Job Description
About the Role:
As a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist in the Oncology Technology group, you will work as part of a large cross-functional team including wet lab, dry lab, and business staff to develop and launch new cancer genotyping products. This position will have the opportunity to develop clinical-grade next-generation sequencing products from conception all the way to analytical validation, commercial launch, and beyond. A successful candidate in this position will have a deep understanding of how molecular and clinical features of cancer influence bioinformatics, hand-on experience with or substantial knowledge of cancer molecular biology, and experience developing clinical-grade software products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work closely with wet lab scientists to design and analyze experiments and use that information to make recommendations for workflow and software configurations
- Develop complex bioinformatics pipelines composed of over a dozen software modules
- Develop new software modules and tune existing software modules to support emerging applications in cancer genotyping
- Lead focused bioinformatics development projects from scoping to deployment
- Mentor junior bioinformatics scientists regarding best practices and experimental design and execution
Qualifications
- PhD with 4+ years of industry experience
- Masters with 8+ years industry experience
- Deep understanding of common algorithms for alignment and the entire spectrum of variant calling from SNVs to large structural rearrangements
- Substantial experience with Python for both analysis and software development
- Strong knowledge of Linux command line and git
- Experience with workflow languages, with Snakemake preferred
- Experience using high-performance computing clusters and schedulers
- Experience with environment management, including Conda and Docker
- Ability to communicate complex bioinformatic topics to a variety of audiences ranging from deeply technical to layperson
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on wet lab molecular biology experience and/or a deep understanding of laboratory techniques and their effects on bioinformatic data
- Experience with R and/or C++
- Experience working with challenging biological inputs, such as FFPE tissue and blood plasma
- Experience developing clinical-grade medical products in a regulated environment
Additional Information
Hybrid Work Model: At Guardant Health, we have defined days for in-person/onsite collaboration and work-from-home days for individual-focused time. All U.S. employees who live within 50 miles of a Guardant facility will be required to be onsite on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $95,200 to $147,200. The range does not include benefits, and if applicable, bonus, commission, or equity. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries across all US locations for the posted role with the exception of any locations specifically referenced below (if any).
For positions based in Palo Alto, CA or Redwood City, CA, the base salary range for this full-time position is $136,000 to $184,000. The range does not include benefits, and if applicable, bonus, commission, or equity.
Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including, but not limited to, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. If you are selected to move forward, the recruiting team will provide details specific to the factors above.
