About The Role
We are hiring a Senior Operations Safety Engineer to support the expansion of Nuro and our technology by leading the Ops Safety team and owning Nuro’s SMS program. The Operations Safety team is a critical part of the success of Nuro’s hardware, software, and commercialization goals. In this role, you will work cross-functionally to develop the safety direction, principles, policies, standards, and programs Nuro needs to enable the operational scaling of our technology in a safe and resource-efficient manner. You will work collaboratively with Orgs across the company and externally in support of building robust safety processes.
About The Work
- Collaborate with teams across Hardware, Autonomy, Systems, Infrastructure, Operations, Security, Product, and Legal to design, build, and execute a world-class Safety Management System aligned with Nuro’s overall commitment to creating a safer world through autonomous vehicles.
- Lay the groundwork of the Ops Safety Team for scaling the team and our technology safely, efficiently, and responsibly
- Provide technical leadership, direction, and coaching for the Ops Safety team, including day-to-day technical system-level assessment and hazard identification
- Perform mission-level hazard analysis for autonomous robotics systems, including Hardware, Autonomy, and Systems
- Build Nuro’s incident response processes to identify trends and mitigate risks
- Develop and implement process safety standards, tools, training, and work processes. You will be a part of developing new evaluation pipelines, completing risk assessments, and implementing mitigation measures.
- Lead Ops validation of new safety, hardware, software, and controls features of future vehicle programs
- Help foster public and regulatory trust by demonstrating Nuro’s commitment to safety excellence
About You
- You have excellent stakeholder management, communication, and coaching skills
- You have expertise in systems-level hazard analysis (i.e., FMEA, STAP, HAZOP, HARA, FTA ) and Human Factors.
- You have skills in EE, CS, CE, or RF engineering
- You have 5+ years of relevant engineering work experience that includes some Systems Safety engineering and experience with Safety Organization structures
- You enjoy working cross-functionally as well as with external stakeholders and excel at communicating with all levels
- You have experience in developing Safety Management Systems
- You have led incident investigations
- You have been successful in the development of requirements and scaling of safety-critical systems in industries such as aerospace, aviation, nuclear, oil & gas, defense, and/or autonomous systems
- You thrive in ambiguity and being part of a team building something that hasn’t been done before; first principles solution-driven
Bonus Points
- You have experience in the Autonomous Vehicle industry and are deeply familiar with the technical details of AV systems
- Advanced degree in Engineering, System Engineering, Engineering and Policy, Engineering Management
At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $152,000 and $228,000 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
